As the new year has rolled in, our LinkedIn feeds are full of exciting updates – new jobs, fresh roles, and career changes. But alongside this buzz, there’s an important conversation happening in schools: the growing impact of social media on young people’s career aspirations. Since September, we’ve been talking to schools about careers and employability, and one thing is clear – social media is shaping how young people view their futures. While it can be an incredible source of inspiration, it’s also creating challenges: ?? Boys increasingly believe they should be sole breadwinners, focusing solely on earning money and sometimes dismissing the idea of university. ?? For girls, this narrative can dampen their sense of belonging in the workplace, limiting their aspirations and confidence. This imbalance affects everyone. That’s why so many schools are working hard to demystify what young people are seeing online, challenging outdated stereotypes, and providing a balanced view of opportunities.
