Congratulations to East Coast Marine Construction & Design for earning a PDCA Project of the Year Award in the Earth Retention: Less than $5M category! Project name: Hawaiian Inn Resort Restoration Since its opening in 1965, the Hawaiian Inn Resort in Daytona Beach, Fla., has been a cherished landmark, hosting countless celebrities and visitors throughout its history. However, the aftermath of Hurricanes Ian and Nicole posed an existential threat to this establishment, prompting a swift response from East Coast Marine Construction & Design. East Coast Marine Construction & Design undertook the shoring and stabilization of the building, as well as the engineering and construction of the 660 linear foot permanent replacement seawall. With the building's foundation at risk of collapse after Hurricane Ian, urgent measures were needed to shore up the structure. However, regulatory constraints prohibited traditional methods, leading East Coast Marine Construction & Design to explore alternatives. The team ended up using sand-filled "trap bags" as a temporary shoring solution just days before Hurricane Nicole entered the region. It worked: the building stood tall throughout the onslaught of the storm. Due to the precarious state of the Hawaiian Inn's five-story north tower and the undermining of the property's in-ground pool, the potential risk of collapse prompted a thorough assessment before any more construction could proceed.
