This afternoon, at the margins of #COP29 in Baku, Amref and the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance PACJA held a pivotal side event on "Advancing Political Commitments on Climate and Health Financing: Where is the Global South Voice?" — a powerful discussion on integrating health into climate finance strategies. Historically, health has often been the “forgotten sector” in global climate dialogues, with more attention placed on agriculture, energy, and transport. Yet, the impacts of climate change—from floods and heatwaves to the spread of diseases—disproportionately affect health, especially in vulnerable communities across the Global South. Our session underscored that it’s time to change this narrative. Key Takeaways and Action Points from the Discussion: ? Reconfiguring Financing Mechanisms – A call to make #ClimateFinance for health accessible, flexible, and adaptable. Current mechanisms need to respond swiftly to emergent health crises, aligned with the guiding principles set at COP28. ? Operationalising the Global Goal on Adaptation – Speakers emphasised the need to advance work at #COP29 to make this goal a reality, focusing on adaptation outcomes that prioritise both physical and mental health. ? Utilising the Fund for Loss and Damage – We highlighted the potential of this fund to address the #health and broader needs of affected communities, while using the Santiago Network to quantify health-related losses. ? Building Health Expertise in Climate Negotiations – There is a pressing need to train health experts as negotiators and include them in national COP delegations, ensuring that health remains a priority in #climate decision-making. ? Recognising Climate Change as a Public Health Emergency – Governments and multilateral agencies must elevate #climatechange to a public health crisis status, with sustained and dedicated funding to match. ? Expanding Funding for Climate-Health Research and Capacity Building – There is a need for increased investment in research, technical support, and programme development focused on climate-health resilience, particularly within #Africa. COP29 is the "Finance COP!" It must meet its promise to mobilise the trillions needed to build resilient health systems, especially for the Global South. #COP29 #ClimateAction #AmrefAtCOP29
