EBLC Legal & Policy Director Miguel Mauricio recently joined East Bay community members and elected officials to celebrate the awarding of a $322 million investment into the Port of Oakland thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act. This investment will help the Port of Oakland modernize to protect the environment, while giving the Port the tools necessary to handle maritime trade.?

Please join the East Bay Leadership Council’s Infrastructure Taskforce for a presentation by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) on their recent Next Generation Bay Area Freeways Study. The event will feature Anup Tapase, Next Generation Freeways Study Project Manager with MTC, who will discuss the study’s findings. The Bay Area’s freeways are too congested — people and goods are stuck in traffic — creating problems for individuals, communities, the environment, and the economy. Launched in early 2022, the Next Generation Bay Area Freeways Study is analyzing the feasibility, costs, benefits, and public support for tolling certain Bay Area freeways as a strategy for delivering reliably high-speed travel and reducing greenhouse gas emissions caused by passenger vehicles. The Next Generation Freeways Study is examining freeway corridors that are (or would be) served well by public transit, and seeks to determine if pricing would encourage drivers to travel during off-peak hours, consolidate their trips, choose alternate destinations, or take public transit or carpool instead of driving alone. The study also seeks to answer questions around who is using the freeways, how tolls can be implemented equitably, other ways to improve transit, and impacts on local streets parallel to freeways. OUR SPEAKER Anup Tapase serves as the Principal Project Planner for the Next Generation Freeways Study with MTC. He has worked as a planner with MTC since 2018. Through his work, Anup aims to make cities more livable by improving public transportation accessibility. He is specifically focused on public transit improvement as well as station area and street planning and design, with an understanding of their impacts on travel behavior, land use and housing development. Anup earned Bachelors Degrees in Electrical Engineering and Economics from Northwestern University and a Masters in City Planning from the University of California Berkeley. DATE / TIME / LOCATION Tuesday, December 3 12:00 - 1:00 PM Zoom Meeting REGISTER HERE https://lnkd.in/gx259ndj

Thank you to the Contra Costa Family Justice Center for hosting the 'Mission Possible' Conference, where EBLC joined leaders from the Contra Costa Community College District, Contra Costa County Office Of Education, and Rubicon Programs to discuss expanding economic opportunity. The conversation highlighted the promise of the growing healthcare sector in our region—an economy in itself—and showcased innovative apprenticeship programs made possible by public-private partnerships, connecting training to high-growth careers. Expanding economic opportunity isn’t just about economic success; it’s a critical path to safer, more resilient communities.

The East Bay Leadership Council was honored to celebrate Gray-Bowen-Scott's 40th anniversary earlier this month at The Garden in Walnut Creek. Their expertise has propelled countless East Bay infrastructure projects, and leaders like William Gray, Teresa (Terry) Bowen, and Leo Scott have guided our mission through decades of dedicated service on our board. Mark A. Orcutt and several EBLC board members were in attendance to raise a glass to many more years of partnership and progress!

Earlier this month, the East Bay Leadership Council had the opportunity to sponsor a session on government, politics, and elections for Leadership Contra Costa, a year-long educational program run by the Walnut Creek Chamber of Commerce. With the election approaching, it was a timely moment to discuss public service, voting resources, polling research, and election processes. Throughout the day, participants engaged with elected officials, journalists, local government staff, and research experts to explore these important topics. ? We also had the opportunity to tour the Contra Costa County Clerk-Recorder’s Office and see firsthand the impressive work being done to get out the vote and securely count and verify ballots. The key takeaway? Vote early—send in those ballots! ? We want to recognize EBLC’s Meg Stern, who helped organize the program alongside her fellow day chairs, Jennifer Ortega and Michael Maddox. All three completed Leadership Contra Costa last year and have come out of the program with a deeper sense of civic engagement and a stronger network within the community. ? A special thank you to our amazing speakers: Kristin Connelly, Gabriel Quinto, Dionne Adams (She, Her, Hers), Kenneth Carlson, Sam Caygill, Mindy Gentry, Marie Suvansin, Kevin Safine, Dan Ashley, and Mindy Romero—your time and expertise defined the day. ?
