We won’t give up on health, community benefits, tribal rights, and the environment! Comite Civico Del Valle, Inc. and Earthworks have filed an appeal challenging the approval of the Controlled Thermal Resources Hell’s Kitchen Lithium Project, near the Salton Sea in California’s Imperial Valley. Earthworks and CCV want to see this project succeed with protections for public health and the environment, strong community benefits, and respect for tribal rights. Any measures won through the lawsuit will benefit the environment and health of directly impacted communities in Imperial County. ??bit.ly/hellskitchenappeal

“The Mining Waste, Fraud, and Abuse Prevention Act is a desperately needed and overdue comprehensive overhaul of U.S. hardrock mining law. It will benefit taxpayers, recognize the rights of Indigenous communities and others affected by mining, and protect irreplaceable waters and habitats. “Mining companies currently have subsidized access to taxpayer-owned minerals without paying royalties and without protections for the rights and wellbeing of Indigenous Peoples, residents, and the environment. Our outdated mining law was written in 1872 and benefits only mining companies. This transformative bill could change all that.” - Aaron Mintzes, Senior Policy Counsel, Earthworks ?? https://lnkd.in/gRX-feUm

A new report by Earthworks and APT Norte reveals dangerous mine waste management practices and the resulting environmental harms caused by a 2023 spill at the El Corazón mine in Northwestern Ecuador. The cyanide in the spilled water was 600 times the legal limit. The Ecuadorian Attorney General should adequately investigate the failure of a dam holding mine waste and hold the company accountable. The mine, owned by Agroindustrial, is located in the Intag region of Ecuador, where communities and defenders of nature have waged a historic 30-year struggle to keep mining companies at bay. The spill was near the biodiverse Cotacachi-Cayapas National Park. Decisive steps must be taken to safeguard water resources, prevent future dam failures, and protect the human rights of environmental defenders. ??https://lnkd.in/gJdS9rtK

?? Ask an Earthworker: What Are Tailings? ?? Did you know some of the largest man-made structures on Earth are tailings dams—and many are so massive they can be seen from outer space? In this episode of Ask an Earthworker, Jan, Earthworks’ Tailings Campaign Manager, breaks down the dangers of tailings and why they pose a massive threat to communities and ecosystems. ???? From catastrophic dam failures, like the 2019 Brumadinho disaster in Brazil, to the long-term pollution of air, water, and soil, tailings cause serious harm. But there’s hope. Jan shares how stronger laws, safer management, and reduced demand for new mining can protect both people and the planet. Let’s work together for safer, more sustainable solutions! ????
