?? Another cold and windy walk this weekend! The dry winds make it tough for fungi, yet we still spotted so many. Huge thanks to our wonderful EwA naturalists and fantastic guests! Some of our favorite finds included impressively large cramp balls, delicate coral spots, and tiny cup fungi growing on pine resin. We also came across a few winter fireflies and fresh cottontail tracks. As for birds—not much movement today. Either they stayed put, or the wind simply drowned them out. There’s something special about immersing ourselves in the wonders of winter, isn’t there? That said—we’re definitely ready for spring! We’re looking forward to returning in a couple of weeks, with plenty of new discoveries surely waiting for us! ?? Join our urban #biodiversity and #climate walks ? https://lnkd.in/e_cmHGMT | ? Nature Conservation as a Way of Life — Biodiversity & Climate, Participatory Science, Ecological Ethics & Leadership.
关于我们
Motto: Nature Conservation as a Way of Life EwA reconciles attitude, science/knowledge & behavior, and connects with the ecological reality. ? Engage through Direct Experiences & Co-creative Citizen Science ? Cultivate Practical Ecology, Literacy & Ethics ? Reconcile Environmental Attitude, Science & Behavior [More] In the tradition of renowned citizen naturalists of the past, Earthwise Aware (EwA) promotes nature conservation as a way of life through advocacy and citizen science. EwA connects our communities to the surprising variety, ingenuity and interconnectedness of nature through public nature and biodiversity events. These events nurture new natural history enthusiasts, conservation stewards and ecology advocates. Citizen science is rapidly becoming a driving force for studying nature and helping scientists conserve ecosystems. Nature conservation starts where we live. Our local communities get a chance to experience what this means first-hand through EwA’s citizen science program. EwA sponsors ecological projects by training community volunteers to collect detailed quality climate and ecosystem data at several established field sites. Unlike citizen naturalists of the past, EwA citizen scientists utilize technology to collect data that fill critical data gaps. Citizen scientists follow rigorous protocols and use specialized apps to compile robust data about pollinators and their host plants, arthropod and bird abundance, timing of plant and animal life events, habitat degradation, and more. For professional naturalists, scientists, and land managers, the data is invaluable and not available any other way. For the volunteers, this is important and enriching work. It increases the understanding of the interconnectedness of our ecosystems and their natural histories, and gives an opportunity to contribute toward their conservation. Visit www.earthwiseaware.org

Exciting to see an article about Earthwise Aware in Civic Science Media Lab. “EwA is not just about collecting data; it’s about fostering an ecological culture’” O’Neill states, “We believe that meaningful conservation begins with a deeper understanding of our surroundings and our role within them. Our work is rooted in the idea that small, everyday actions that are well-informed and intentional can lead to significant ecological and cultural shifts.” Thanks, Emma for a lovely interview! https://lnkd.in/eb7P5vDx

Winter's blanket of snow couldn't stop our passionate naturalists! While many insects were nestled away for the season, we documented a fascinating world of winter buds during today's Earthwise Aware (EwA) orientation at the Somerville Growing Center. Our newest citizen scientists brought wonderful enthusiasm to learning phenology – the study of nature's seasonal rhythms. Thank you to all our new EwA community scientists for braving the cold and contributing to vital urban biodiversity monitoring. Your observations help us understand how climate change affects our local ecosystem. Want to become an urban naturalist? Join our upcoming field training sessions where you'll learn to document local flora and fauna through the seasons. Together, we're building a deeper understanding of our urban ecosystem and its response to environmental change.
