Earthshot Labs is working with Rio Tinto to help develop high-integrity nature-based solutions (NbS) near their operations. We are supporting Rio Tinto with a suite of carbon development services such as pre-feasibility and feasibility studies, gap analysis, project design, validation, verification and monitoring for projects seeking certification under the Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS). One of the projects we’re most excited about is with BirdLife International and Amity Madagascar to lead the Project Design Document development and strategy for the Tsitongambarika REDD+ Project. This project aims to protect over 40,000 hectares from high deforestation threats and provide sustainable development opportunities for local communities. The REDD+ project is coupled with support for a community-led, landscape-scale reforestation (ARR) initiative with significant biodiversity and livelihood co-benefits in the broader landscape. Our work also includes support with project investment due diligence and identification of high-integrity projects in Rio Tinto’s operational landscapes. Quote from Earthshot’s CEO Troy Carter: “We’ve been really impressed by Rio Tinto’s commitment to forest conservation and restoration, while always adhering to the highest quality project standards.?While so many companies are back tracking on their 2030 and 2050 targets globally, Rio Tinto has emerged as a leader that follows through with real capital at scale for NbS, and we are honored to help them deliver their nature-based solutions projects through this long-term partnership.” Big shout out to the hard working teams at RT: Theresia Ott Cindy Wilhelm, PhD Nyasha Fidelis Shumbayarerwa, P.Eng. We learned a lot of lessons getting the first VM0047 project through the carbon development and audit process, and worked out a lot of kinks in the methodology and new requirements like dynamic baselining. We're hosting an hour-long mini training on how you can navigate this process as a carbon project developer, and some key sticking points to watch out for as an investor or buyer when putting capital to work. RSVP Here: https://lu.ma/af0zcw74 We invited three of the core Earthshot science, compliance, and social safeguards specialists to share their wisdom and lessons learned. I'm very much looking forward to this presentation and Q&A with Cecilia Simon Polly Thornton Emily Tompkins Invite folks who you think would benefit :)

Dear Earthshot allies, I got so busy immediately after the holidays that I never sent an annual update, so here you go :) It was an epic year, and I want to send major props to the rest of the Earthshot team. We’re all working together because restoring and protecting nature is one of the great challenges of our time. I believe that when looking back 100 years from now, we will recognize an equivalent magnitude of importance placed on reaching a healthy equilibrium with the rest of nature as we will see in humans becoming a space-faring civilization, the ubiquity of AI and robotics, or reaching free and abundant energy. But somehow, in our current hype cycle, nature conservation seems less sexy, instead replaced by a technological enthusiasm that makes us forget the ecosystems that provide the conditions to sustain life on this planet. If ecological degradation continues at its current rate, there could be no remaining unprotected primary forests left on the planet by the end of the century, a similar level of biodiversity loss to the meteor impact 65 million years ago that took 2-8 million years to recover from. We clearly don’t want to do that, and it takes committing ~.5% of global GDP per year to adequately restore and protect nature. Earthshot’s mission is too important to be swayed by hype cycles. Regulations may be slow. Market dynamics are unpredictable. But on a decade-long time horizon, I believe Earthshot can become a globally critical organization responding to the escalating ecological crisis. We’re in it to see the challenge through, and we’re glad to have you with us. 2024 Business Highlights: Financed $62m in reforestation and conservation projects 100% yoy financial growth The world’s first reforestation project validated under the new Verra VM0047 ARR methodology Worked with 32 reforestation and conservation projects across four continents Earthshot is also growing organically at roughly breakeven profitability each month, a positive feedback loop of serving more projects and growing the team to lower costs and expand our global coverage. Profitable growth means that Earthshot prioritizes our mission and service to land stewards over the long term without being as affected by uncertain market conditions. The consistency and foundational work in 2024 is the perfect launching pad for scaling in 2025. Our 2025 goals include: Another year of 100%+ financial and team growth Work on 40+ new projects Set up $10m Technical Assistance facility to support early-stage project financing More comprehensive support for new compliance carbon markets Advanced automation of pre-feasibility and feasibility, to lower cost and increase market accessibility for land stewards Thank you for being on this journey together! It’s incredibly special to be able to work with such a dedicated team and partner on a common mission. Reach out if you want to chat or work with us in 2025. Troy

Our new President Donald Trump is a smart real estate developer, so does that mean he’ll implement intelligent climate policy? The LA fires will cost $250-275BN; at some point the economic return of nature restoration and climate action will be cheaper than the cost of escalating disasters. So what magnitude of climate and ecological disaster is this tipping point? I was thinking about the 2008 subprime mortgage collapse as the most recent financial comp, and trying to build a corollary; how large and how often would a disaster have to occur to put the US in a similar position? Housing prices nationally fell about 6% between 2007 and early 2008, a loss of about $2 Trillion, and in March of 2008, 8.8 million homeowners had negative equity in their homes. For most asset classes this decrease wouldn’t be unusual; many stocks today trade with that level of volatility regularly. But housing is leveraged, typically 5x (with a 20% down payment), so a 20% decrease in value wipes out 100% of an average person’s equity position. In addition to individual leverage, financial institutions take on even more leverage when aggregating these into securities, which in 2008 caused a credit crunch and contagion throughout financial markets and eventually a real economy decline of 4.3%. The largest recent disasters before the LA hires have been Hurricanes Katrina, Harvey, Ian, and Maria with each more than $100BN in damages, and the frequency of $1BN+ loss events has more than tripled in the last forty years. However, even with an equivalent LA fire each year, it seems unlikely that we’ll reach $2TR in direct disaster damages in a single-year period any time in the next decade that could similarly freeze the financial system. But what about a decrease in the underlying value of real estate as an asset class? Housing in 2008 was still considered an appreciating asset long-term that was experiencing a temporary blip. Now, Florida, the eastern seaboard, and many parts of the western US may experience real sustained decreases in home values if insurance prices continue to go up (3x in five years in Florida) or insurers pull out entirely (80% no longer have flood insurance in Florida). Back of the envelope dcf model, assuming 5% appreciation vs a new 1% depreciation rate, that change in future outlook would equate to a 15-20% price decrease today. In Florida alone that would be more than $500BN value decrease. It’s hard to predict the magnitude of this effect, but the core point is that changing the slope of expected annual increase in hurricane and fire risk can sink property values to a level at least as great as the 2008 financial crisis. I think you probably get the point from me being on repeat every week: conservation and restoration of nature helps preserve real estate asset values with an ROI that makes sense regardless of political orientation or ideology around climate change.
