TRUE: The extinction rate of plant species today is about 500 times higher than before industrialization began in the 1750s. TRUE: Agriculture is one of the largest threats to ecosystems around the world. FALSE: We are currently in what is known as the second extinction wave since humans began walking the earth. INSIGHT: There have been two major extinction events since humans began walking the planet: one between 60,000 and 10,000 years ago when many large land mammals (like wooly mammoths) went extinct, one between 5,000 and 500 years ago when thousands of bird and island species went extinct (like giant lemurs). Since 1500, and made worse after the post-industrialization era (1750s to the present), we have entered a third extinction wave. More than 1,200 known species have become extinct in this time with at least 500 more expected to go extinct in the next 50 years . . . Unless we step in and take action to prevent this from happening.
