  • This #FieldworkFriday update comes to you from Praia, Cabo Verde! Engineers swapped out batteries, repaired solar panels, and upgraded communication systems at Global Seismographic Network (GSN) station SACV. These upgrades help ensure the GSN continues delivering high-quality seismic data for earthquake monitoring, research, and global hazard preparedness. ?? Wade Johnson, Yelebe Amere / EarthScope

  • EarthScope’s Essential Experts: Behind the Science Meet Abby Byrum, a Staff Accountant II! "I manage timesheets and run payroll for all employees. Depending on the day of the week, I am either an employee's least favorite or most favorite co-worker! I also do a lot of behind-the-scenes number crunching to keep day-to-day operations going and help keep us in line with our budgets." Abby plays a critical role in keeping EarthScope running smoothly—from ensuring employees get paid to managing budgets that support the organization’s mission. "Without my support, or the support of our amazing Finance team, the lights couldn't stay on at EarthScope—both literally and figuratively. We have incredible scientists, engineers, and many other team members that don't have time to think about the tiny details of budgets or spreadsheets." What does Abby love about her work? Constant learning—and spreadsheets! "My motto is 'learn something new every day,' and at EarthScope, it's pretty easy to live by that motto. When you surround yourself with brilliant minds, you can learn a thing 'r two. Also, I just really love spreadsheets!" And outside of work? Abby is a proud minivan driver, Disney fan, and Halloween enthusiast who loves the outdoors. "I like to think I am super unique (I mean, truly, we all are), but really, I am just your average minivan-driving (don't knock it till you try it!), Disney-loving, Halloween-obsessed, outdoor-thriving, working mom that hopes to make a positive impact in the world. No matter how big or small that impact may be." ----------- From logistics to administration, contracts to financials, a dedicated team of experts keeps everything running at EarthScope. This March, we’re spotlighting the women behind the scenes who make geophysical research possible—sharing their work, their impact, and what they love about supporting science.

  • EarthScope’s Essential Experts: Behind the Science Meet Kris Zentmeyer, a Recruiter and HR Generalist II! "As a recruiter, I source, attract, and hire top talent for EarthScope, focusing on candidates with expertise in geophysics, Earth sciences, engineering, and related fields. My responsibilities include reviewing applications, conducting initial screenings, maintaining communication with candidates and hiring teams, and providing guidance on interview processes. I also collaborate closely with HR to create competitive offers and facilitate onboarding for new hires." Kris plays a key role in building EarthScope’s workforce that drives transformative geophysical research and education by attracting, identifying, and securing top talent who advance EarthScop'es initiatives and educational outreach. "I'm passionate about my job because I love connecting individuals with opportunities that align with their personal and professional passions and interests. It's incredibly fulfilling to know that my work contributes directly to advancing this important field. I'm also fortunate to interact daily with the brilliant minds within our organization. My role is like a puzzle, and I find great satisfaction in finding the missing pieces and seeing new hires thrive in their roles." And when she’s not matching top talent to EarthScope’s mission? Kris winds down with crime documentaries, bakes a mean chocolate chip cookie, and—true to her recruiter skills—LOVES to organize. ----------- From logistics to administration, contracts to financials, a dedicated team of experts keeps everything running at EarthScope. This March, we’re spotlighting the women behind the scenes who make geophysical research possible—sharing their work, their impact, and what they love about supporting science.

  • From the Arctic tundra to volcanic islands, the EarthScope Primary Instrument Center (EPIC) has supported geophysical experiments in an incredible range of environments. Researchers rely on the EPIC’s seismometers, GNSS receivers, and other geophysical instruments to study earthquakes, tectonic movement, and subsurface structures. • EarthScope’s Essential Experts: Behind the Science Meet Trisha Wright, our Contracts Associate! “I help make sure that we are meeting all of the legal requirements of our funding partners, that we are being good stewards of our resources, and that our colleagues can get answers to ‘are we allowed to do that?’ Everything from GPS site permits and international partnerships to agreements that maintain our facilities, there's a decent chance I have tossed some glitter on it.” As part of EarthScope’s Contracts and Compliance team, Trisha reviews contracts for large procurements, drafts policies, and now serves as administrator for awards and subawards. Her work helps ensure EarthScope’s research and operations run smoothly within legal and financial guidelines. “Since I'm about to pass my 1 year mark with EarthScope, what I enjoy most about my job are my colleagues and mentors. It's been truly enjoyable to build these new relationships and be supported while my role has expanded. If I can do nothing else, I am here to be a sounding board and get someone to smile before we say ‘goodbye.’” Before EarthScope, Trisha worked in litigation practice handling all kinds of cases, so chances are she has a weird story to go with just about any topic of conversation. She also loves a good dad joke but admits she’s terrible at remembering them or telling them in the right order. ----------- From logistics to administration, contracts to financials, a dedicated team of experts keeps everything running at EarthScope.
