?? Thank you to everyone who attended the EarthRights alumni regional gathering in Chiang Mai, Thailand. It was a memorable event, with over 60 alumni from the Mekong region in attendance. This gathering allowed us to foster connections and share knowledge in a way that only such a diverse group could achieve. ?? During the event, the alumni shared their experiences, participated in group activities, and formed new connections. They also discussed the pilot phases for the Communities of Practice (COP), exploring approaches for implementation at the country and regional levels. ? Once again, we extend our gratitude to all for bringing their wisdom, energy, and passion to the gathering. Your active participation created an inspiring atmosphere filled with camaraderie, strengthened our alumni network, and laid the foundation for future collaborations.

We are excited to see them apply their new skills to better serve their communities. ?? The MLAI program takes place in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and brings together 17 participants from Cambodia, China, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. This program equips participants with essential knowledge in community lawyering, environmental issues, and human rights. Additionally, participants have the opportunity to enhance their skills in legal analysis and documentation, empowering them to make a positive impact in their communities.

EarthRights joins the NGO community in opposing the Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act, H.R.9495, in its current form. This bill, introduced by Representatives Tenney (R-NY), Kustoff (R-TN), Schneider (D-IL), and Titus (D-NV), goes well beyond its stated purpose and would provide U.S. government officials with dangerously broad powers to shut down nonprofit organizations with whom they disagree. ?? https://lnkd.in/giPP9ak6

?? Participants in the Mekong Legal Advocacy Institute (MLAI) program recently took part in a field mission to the indigenous Karen community in Omkoi. During this visit, they learned about the community’s campaign against a planned coal mine on their land. Before this mission, the participants had also visited the Administrative Court in Chiang Mai. ??These firsthand experiences provide the MLAI participants with essential knowledge about community lawyering, environmental issues, and human rights. Additionally, they have the opportunity to enhance their skills in legal analysis and documentation, enabling them to serve their communities better. ??This year, the three-week MLAI program, which began on November 4, has welcomed 17 young lawyers and legal advocates from six Mekong countries: Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. The program will conclude this week—stay tuned for our post featuring photos from the program’s “Graduation Day.”

???"The lessons that we learned from the training are really unique and quite new. ????Meet Rachana from Cambodia. She is studying law and is a member of the Bunong Indigenous group. Reflecting on her experience at the Mekong Legal Advocacy Institute (MLAI) training program last year, Rachana appreciates how the program connected her with fellow young lawyers and legal advocates. The program provided her with essential knowledge about environmental and human rights, as well as legal strategies that she can apply in her community. From November 4 to 22, the MLAI program takes place in Chiang Mai, Thailand. For three weeks, we host 17 young lawyers and legal advocates from six Mekong countries: Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam.
