From October 28th?to 30th, 50 Roux students participated in a Climate Resiliency Hackathon as part of 300+ students from across seven global Northeastern University campuses (Miami, Oakland, Roux, Toronto, Seattle, Silicon Valley, and Vancouver). The event was organized in partnership with the non-profit, Earth Hacks. At The Roux Institute at Northeastern University, the event was hosted by the ClimateTech Incubator and sponsored by The Nature Conservancy. Students participated in a kickoff workshop, a session on climate anxiety, a panel on careers in climate and the environment led by four NU alums (two of whom are directly connected to the Roux's ClimateTech Incubator - thanks Jeff Kimmel and Eric S. Howard, EdD CFRE!!), and office hours with industry mentors. We had seven mentors participate from organizations including Avangrid (thanks Laney Brown, Alistair Raymond, and Lauren Magin!!), The Nature Conservancy (thanks Connor Horton!!), and Northeastern University (thanks Becca Berkey, Ph.D., Jordan Doherty, and Conor Laver!!). We all owe a HUGE thank you to Megan Sykes, M.A. for this great idea, for bringing us all together, and for making this such a great event! After three days of hacking, on Wednesday each campus held their own pitch competition - the Roux judges (thanks Warren Adams, Jennifer Spillane, PhD, Ryan Bockmon, Ph.D., and Connor Horton!!) selected the top three ideas from ten presenting teams - and then all seven campuses came together to celebrate the winners. Students learned experientially about climate justice, innovation, and teamwork. ? Our winning teams were: 1st?Place: See Level Rise ( Qiuhao Gu, Nick Toole, John Kovarik, Sampson (Sam) Boateng) ? 2nd?Place: Heat-X (Dev Akre, Arnav Jaiswal, Aryan Bhanushali, Gargi Vipat, Rohan Puntambekar) 3rd?Place: North Watch (Reena Sajad Hyder, Shashwath U., Tharanitharan Muthuthirumaran, Reemaa Sajad Hyder, Luke Abbatessa) See comments below for solution descriptions!

?? Hello, everyone! On the weekend of November 23-24, we’ll have Amaz?niaHack ??, an international hackathon focused on creating solutions for the Amazon’s forest monitoring challenges. Registration is open until **Nov 21** at www.amazoniahack.co. I participated last year, and here’s what I can tell you: ? For those looking to make an impact, the first question is often "how?" – if that’s you, register IMMEDIATELY ?? ?? ? It was an excellent opportunity to make valuable connections with people from around the world: engineers, PhDs, activists, entrepreneurs, and many more. ? And no, it wasn’t one of those grueling hackathons where you don’t even have time to sleep – and yes, there’s a prize at the end. ? Engineers, designers, students… Whatever your expertise, there’s room for everyone – plus, it’s 100% remote and free. You literally have nothing to lose. ?? The hackathon is organized by Libélula, LITU, and Earth Hacks. This year, my business partner Guilherme Felitti and I will be mentors. Moiru, Novelo's branch dedicated to accelerating smart solutions for tackling the climate crisis, will support the event, alongside Imazon, Amazon Investor Coalition, and others! #Amaz?niaHack #ClimateAction #ForestMonitoring #SaveTheAmazon #HackForGood #TechForNature #GlobalHackathon #RemoteHackathon #InnovateForImpact #ClimateCrisis #SustainableSolutions #AmazonRainforest

Thank you Earth Hacks for featuring my poem "When the Dogoyaro Talks" in this year's Environmental Justice in Tech zine, Glitch 2024. You can access the zine and read it here: https://lnkd.in/gvZPk92B This year's theme explored the intersection of spirituality, environmental justice, and technology. Here is snippet of my author's statement to get more insight into my piece: "I believe good technology is about utilizing the wisdom of the past and present to create something useful for the future. In this piece, I wanted to pay homage to my Nigerian culture. Growing up, I read a lot of folktales and fables that used the natural world to instill morals and tell complex stories. I wanted to imitate that idea by telling the story of Dogoyaro, a personified Neem tree. Dogoyaro's story takes place in the future and highlights the dangers of bad technology when it threatens important societal values and nature. It shows how mankind can disregard what was once considered good or "sacred" in pursuit of advancement. It is also a cautionary tale about apathy towards environmental justice. Redemption is a very spiritual concept and I wanted to explore that as well in this poem. Redemption, in this story, calls for active participation. I hope that, through this piece, the reader can consider how to be a more active contributor to environmental justice - no matter how small that contribution may seem." The Environmental Justice in Tech (EJIT) is a project by Earth Hacks that explores visions for the future of environmentally just technology and the key questions it raises. You can learn more about EJIT here: https://lnkd.in/gH6uj5Kh It was such a joy to be selected to contribute to this year's zine as the themes align greatly with topics I value. This was also a milestone for me as this was the first time I've had my poetry selected for a publication as an adult. I consider this to be a great victory as I go after publicly sharing my creative work more seriously. I hope you take something away from the beautiful and thought-provoking pieces in this year's zine.
