?? "Instead of fixating on conventional economic expansion, Europe could focus on curbing overconsumption and meeting people’s needs more efficiently—placing wellbeing above the pursuit of maximum GDP growth." In a new article for Social Europe, Earth4All Transformational Economics Commission member and Honorary President of The Club of Rome Anders Wijkman argues that in the light of the Draghi report's warnings of stagnation, Europe must must resist the pressure to follow America’s lead and forge its own path rooted in social equity, environmental sustainability, and long-term wellbeing. Earth4All is a global collective of scientists, economists, communicators, advocates, with the will to act. The dominant economic thinking and its underlying model are destabilising societies. And the planet. It is time for a change. Earth4All has identified five extraordinary turnarounds needed to create wellbeing for all on a (relatively) stable planet. This analysis combines the best available science with new economic thinking. Five turnarounds to rethink capitalism, move beyond GDP, and bring our societies on a safe pathway to wellbeing for all. ?? "Stable, successful, confident and positive societies are not produced by the pursuit of growth for its own sake, but by clarity and purposiveness about what growth is supposed to serve." Rowan Williams highlights his work with Earth4All Transformational Economics Commission member Tim Jackson and CUSP | Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity exploring what citizens really want from "growth": opportunity, public services, housing, a stable environment. Earth4All polling also backs the demand for growing public good, not growth for growth's sake: over two thirds of people agree that the economy should focus on the health and wellbeing of people and nature, not just profit. "When we hear politicians appealing to the imperative of growth, we should be asking insistently what the word means, what we are supposed to be growing into or towards." The recent Draghi report on EU competitiveness paints a stark picture: without major reforms, the standard of living for future generations is at risk. But is faster GDP growth really the answer? In his latest piece for Social Europe Publishing & Consulting GmbH, Anders Wijkman, Earth4All Transformational Economics Commission member and Honorary President of The Club of Rome, argues that comparing Europe to the United States on economic growth is misleading. While the US model delivers higher GDP per capita, the benefits are concentrated in the hands of a wealthy elite - leaving public services underfunded and inequality unchecked. Europe, he suggests, must resist the pressure to follow America’s lead. Instead, the EU should double down on its own vision - one rooted in social equity, environmental sustainability, and long-term wellbeing. Read his perspective here ?https://lnkd.in/d2F8Hq6b

It was a great privilege to sit down with Sandrine Dixson-Declève to talk about Earth4All, The Club of Rome and how transformational economics and "five extraordinary turnarounds" could help humanity take a great leap forward. But we have to start with democracy. That's why the conversation was recorded at International IDEA in Stockholm. Across different new economy frameworks, there’s a shared understanding: the economy should serve people and planet—not the other way around. This means recognizing that the economy is nested within society and the natural world, not separate or superior to them. It’s an ancient principle, one that Indigenous Communities have embodied for millennia, offering profound lessons for how we design our future.
