Earth Celebrations is a nonprofit organization founded in 1991 on the Lower East Side of New York City to engage communities to generate ecological and social change through the arts. Our projects address climate change, water quality, river restoration, waste management, and the preservation of species, habitats, nature, gardens, parks, and a healthy urban environment. Earth Celebrations has developed innovative strategies, integrating collaborative arts, civic engagement and environmental action, to provide our community with a creative platform to address and develop solutions to local environmental and climate challenges. We build broad-based coalitions and diverse sector partnerships with local organizations, academic institutions, government agencies, schools and community residents, to work together to achieve common goals and ecological, policy and social change.

Our second Art & Climate Solutions Workshop was incredibly productive and joyous thanks to our amazing community of volunteers. The puppets are coming to life with layers of "papier-maché" and their hands in formation while artist Yohanna Roa guides volunteers in sewing mini mushrooms for her a"Carbon Sequestration" dress, modeled here by our intern Bella! Exciting news: we’re honored to announce that we’ve received a grant from [@NYCulture’s / NYC Department of Cultural Affairs’] FY2025 Cultural Development Fund (CDF)!! Art and culture are the heart and soul of New York, contributing to a safer, stronger, more vibrant city. We’re proud to be among 1,078 organizations receiving over $59 million through the CDF - the largest-ever city allocation for the program, thanks to the partnership between the NYC Mayor’s Office and the City Council. The award will support the 2025 Ecological City - Art & Climate Solutions Action Project. Ecological City engages our community through the arts on urban climate challenges and solutions throughout the community gardens, neighborhood, and waterfront on the Lower East Side of New York City. Through months of partnership building and Art & Climate Solutions Workshops (March-May), led by our artists-in-residence, community participants collaborate in co-creating visual art, giant puppets, costumes, and performances exploring local sites and their climate solution initiatives. Visual and performance works are presented in the culminating Ecological City - Procession for Climate Solutions, throughout 21 sustainability sites, on Saturday, May 10th, 2025.
