The Social Security Fairness Act eliminates the Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset, increasing benefits for 3.2 million Americans, including teachers, firefighters, and police officers. Retroactive payments start immediately, with increased monthly benefits beginning in April 2025. For current Social Security recipients, this means they may receive a one-time retroactive payment and higher monthly benefits if they were previously affected by these provisions. Starting in 2025, the law will also allow workers aged 60 through 63 to make a larger catch-up contribution to certain retirement plans.
