?? IRA PROJECT OF THE DAY
It's been two years since the passage of the federal Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). So what has the IRA done so far ... and what's at risk if we go backward and roll back or reduce the policy??Here's your daily sample of the 340+ major clean energy projects announced since the passage of the IRA. NEW YORK - I’m at Climate Week in New York this week, so for today's IRA Project of the Day, let’s go to my first stop in the Empire State: JFK Airport.
There, one of the biggest solar and battery projects in the state is now under construction, thanks in part to support from the IRA.
With enough solar panels to cover approximately 11 football fields, the new JFK solar panel-covered parking lot will produce enough energy – 12 megawatts – to power the AirTrain terminal connector train I rode last night, and also provide discounted electricity to nearby low-income communities. The project also includes 7.5 megawatts of battery storage that the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey can tap into to reduce airport electricity demand during peak hours.
As a bonus, the project will also provide shade for about 3,000 vehicles. And speaking of vehicles, when fully up and running in 2026, the project will produce enough clean energy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 6,000 tons per year – the equivalent of reducing the pollution produced by driving 26 million vehicle miles, according to the Port Authority.
