Thinking about hitting the trails now that warmer Spring weather is here? The ELR Landscape Architecture team partnered with the City of Bridgeport, WV and the West Virginia Department of Transportation - Division of Highways to make that easier. The extension of an existing mile-long multi-use walking trail for safe pedestrian passage now links Main Street to Hinkle and Deegan Lakes, giving walkers, runners and cyclists a safe and easy path to the outdoors.

After many long hours of engineering to expedite the repair of the Daniel Carter Beard Bridge, we were excited to celebrate the success last week with the Cincinnati Reds! ⚾ The Big Mac Bridge (as it's known to locals for its 2 yellow arches across the span) repairs were completed in just 100 days after a devastating fire compromised part of the southbound approach. This critical bridge on I-471 is key to commuters, long haul truckers and Reds fans alike! While the game vs the Texas Rangers wasn't a win for the Reds, but ELR employees, Jim O'Leary (and his son), Tim Sheldon, Mark Boyer, James Walker, EIT and Michael Malloy, enjoyed the game with other members of the project team in the stands. Earlier this week, one of ELR's own participated in speed-roundtable discussions at the University of Dayton with freshman civil engineering students (about 50 in all). Members of the various civil engineering disciplines including ELR Columbus, Louis Schulte P.E. (Geotechnical Lead) were invited to the event. The participating Dayton freshman were divided into groups of 4-5. Each group rotated around for roughly 10 minutes of discussion with each discipline representative to help students to (hopefully) discern a future career path. Louis said of the experience, "It was great speaking with the next generation of engineers and help them explore all the options available to them in the industry." May be one day we'll welcome one of these Flyers into the ELR family! 🛩️🎓

Mentor. Teacher. Leader. Helpful. These are all words we heard repeated over and over from Tim Cart's coworkers when asked to describe him for his upcoming retirement celebration. With 28 years at ELR Charleston (and 20+ years of engineering before that) as a project manager, engineer, surveyor, and lead geotechnical investigator, Tim has played a key role in countless projects -- from highways and bridges to industrial and site developments. Civil engineering designer, Joe Jude said it best: "To say [Tim] will be missed here is such an understatement, but [we] wish you all the best in a well-deserved retirement!" We extend our sincere gratitude for his numerous contributions at ELR. Congratulations, Tim! We wish you the best for your next chapter. Comment below with a favorite memory of Tim!

Retirement is commonly defined as "the action or fact of leaving one’s job and ceasing to work." The exception to this definition is Dave Traini, who has "retired" many times in his career. Dave began his second career working at ELR after leaving service with ODOT in 2000. As the fourth employee at ELR Ohio, he successfully led the Ohio Structures Group for the past 25 years contributing to significant projects alongside exceptionally talented coworkers and colleagues. A year ago, Dave took a step back on his project leads testing the waters of part-time retirement before jumping all in. ELR Ohio owes much of its success to Dave Traini's leadership and dedication. 🎉 Happy Retirement Dave! 🎉 Flip through the images to see what some of his ELR colleagues had to say about him. In the comments, add your own personal send off to Dave!

It's satisfying as a professional to see your work move from design ➡️ funding ➡️ construction➡️ and finally to a ribbon cutting. Members of the landscape architecture and design team (Todd Schoolcraft and Emily Bryant) at ELR Charleston were able to do just that today when they attended a ribbon cutting of the new Elk River Boat Ramp in Clendenin, WV. The ramp will serve fishermen, boaters and kayakers alike. Yet this is no ordinary boat ramp - built to be an environmentally friendly, low impact, green infrastructure park amenity that utilizes several applications to make it more flood resilient. As the Clendenin area knows from the devastating 2016 floods, you can never be 100% flood-proof, so attractions must be designed to be resilient to occasional flooding. The project was completed in collaboration with the WV Department of Natural Resources and JF Allen Construction. Read more about the ribbon cutting here: https://lnkd.in/ekv9KBHE

Tomorrow is World Water Day, we are singing the praises of some of our often-unsung civil engineering heroes, our water inspectors, whose work is often demanding, hazardous, and unglamorous, but essential. Benny McCune, Mike Hodges, Ronnie-Williams, Jim Thomas, Rob Robinson, Blaine Paige, Lester Armstead, Nathaniel Lynch, Rick Cantrell, Mike Fleck, Adam Hooser, Brad Cosner – thank you for braving some of the toughest conditions to keep our drinking water clean, our environment safe, and our communities protected. Water inspectors work across various industries, including municipal water and wastewater systems and construction projects, to protect public health, prevent contamination, and ensure sustainable water management in civil engineering projects. Their work ensures that clean drinking water reaches communities, wastewater is properly treated, and natural water sources remain free from harmful pollutants.
