We’re honored to have played a key role in the expedited repair of the Daniel Carter Beard Bridge (affectionately known as the “Big Mac Bridge” thanks to its giant yellow arches) over the Ohio River. Just 100 days after a devastating fire compromised part of the southbound approach, this critical bridge is now fully reopened. ELR’s expert structural engineering team, led by Michael Malloy, worked tirelessly—nights, weekends, and all—to assess, analyze, and develop comprehensive repair plans, ensuring the bridge’s quick recovery and long-lasting safety. A huge thank you to all the incredible partners whose collaboration made the success of this project possible. We're proud to have contributed to this landmark project! “Reopening southbound access to this bridge in just over three months is a tremendous accomplishment," said Governor DeWine in a February 7th press release. "The closure of these lanes wasn't only an inconvenience, but also a disruption to the supply chain. I applaud our ODOT team and their partners for working hard to finish the project ahead of schedule." According to CareerExplorer data, women will represent approximately 31% of engineers in 2025. However, as of 2022 (the most recent reliable data on civil engineering), only 17% of civil engineers were women. There are signs of progress, but engineering remains a male-dominated field. This dynamic has inspired mentorship and support initiatives among dedicated women in the profession. We’re proud to have just such a group right here in our Columbus office, launched in mid-2024 by Ryan Dresbach. Meeting quarterly, this group connects experienced women in the office with newer professionals to discuss everything from career growth and technical challenges to navigating tricky workplace situations. Last month, the ELR Women’s group tackled the topic of bringing more women into open roles in the field and is already discussing expanding the program to our Cleveland office. We celebrate the incredible women driving change, building connections, and shaping the future of engineering across all of our locations. #WomenInSTEM #MentorshipMatters

Engineers Week has us looking up, and we see innovation everywhere. Drones have been hovering in the sky and in the media more lately. We use them extensively for surveying, bridge and roadway studies, and bridge inspections. Our licensed drone pilots, Matthew Papesh, James Bower, Joe Canterbury, Rob Pfingsten use drones to provide easy access to aerial imaging, helping support various civil engineering projects with valuable benefits, including: - Safety monitoring to spot dangerous areas - Real-time tracking of construction progress - Efficiency of quick data collection - Accuracy in maps and measurements - Cost-effectiveness with reduced manual surveying - Environmental monitoring for changes or hazards - Infrastructure monitoring for signs of wear and tear - Progress reporting using aerial views Using drones also carries limitations, including height and lateral extent of reach, regulatory challenges, and weather dependency. Even so, the benefits for our team and clients are worth working through the limitations.
