IN THE NEWS WITH The Columbus Dispatch 📢 The Columbus Public Library was established on March 4, 1873, in a room within Columbus City Hall, thanks largely to the efforts of abolitionist leaders. Unlike most libraries at the time, it was free and open to all, reflecting the inclusive values of its founders. Many early supporters including library board president John W. Andrews, Ohio Supreme Court Judge Joseph R. Swan, James Westwater, and Dr. William E. Ide were outspoken abolitionists. Their legacy of fighting for freedom and equality laid the foundation for the library’s creation. One of the most notable figures involved was John T. Ward, who became a key figure in Columbus. Hired as the second employee and library custodian in 1873, Ward was also a freedom fighter on the Underground Railroad. He came to Ohio in 1828, helped countless enslaved people reach freedom, and later founded a moving company with his brother that still operates today as E.E. Ward Moving & Storage, which is the oldest Black-owned business in the U.S. Ward’s role in both the library and the community underscores the deep connections between abolitionist work and public institutions in Columbus. His legacy lives on not only through the library system, which now includes 23 branches, but also through his contributions to civil rights and business.
