What a whirlwind of two weeks.? ?? From Houston, to London, Brussels and Berlin.?While the discourse between the two regions?could not be more different, energy and energy security were at the heart of conversations. Below are some of my reflections from either side of the pond. The sentiment reminds me of in many ways, 20 years ago when I did my masters at King's College London. At the time Russia was flexing its muscles on energy imports to Europe and for the first time it was talked about that oil might hit $100 a barrel. My studies focused on energy security. Two decades later, that perspective is proving germane – my central takeaway is that energy security will drive the energy transition going forward, with affordability and climate goals as second and far third priorities. ?In fact, Net-Zero and Net Zero commitments were largely left out of conversations in both regions by private and public sector leaders. ? ?? Conversations at CERAWeek focused on energy dominance, energy abundance, and digitization with the role AI and data centers driving load growth. Almost every panel highlighted the significant demand growth from data centers by 2030, highlighting associated opportunities and challenges. ????? In Europe, conversations on energy ultimately came back to security. In Berlin the discussions focused on how Europe is cultivating a diversified energy mix to insulate themselves from geopolitical, macro, and financial risks. While in Brussels, I was told that the recent geopolitical changes could bring an increasingly fragmented Europe together to focus on security of energy supply and physical security from Russia. Many pointed to this moment as one that Europe must confront united. ?? With respect to technologies, both regions are considering the role nuclear will play in addition to renewables and natural gas to ensure robust baseload power and grid stability.?A year ago, an “all-of-the-above” strategy was not on the table in Europe. ?? Now more than ever, collaboration between countries and companies is essential to ensuring that the energy transition continues accelerating and delivers on security, affordability and climate mitigation. Is nuclear the solution to US clean energy? During #CERAWeek at the "Next-Gen Nuclear: Scaling Clean Energy" event, hosted by Axios and Constellation, industry leaders emphasized the critical role of nuclear power in providing clean, reliable, and affordable energy, despite existing permitting challenges. Dynamo member, Jeremy Harrell, CEO of ClearPath joined others from Constellation, CRES, and Columbia University Center on Global Energy Policy. In his remarks, Harrell highlighted the significance of the Accelerating Reliable Capacity (ARC) Act in facilitating first-of-a-kind (#FOAK) nuclear projects. This legislation aims to break the project finance gridlock that often impedes innovative and capital-intensive nuclear ventures. Harrell recently testified before Congress on the urgent need for permitting reform to accelerate the deployment of advanced nuclear energy technologies and lessen project cost burdens. He emphasized that regulatory unpredictability is the biggest barrier to meeting US energy, climate, and economic goals and stressed that while the technology is ready, delays in securing permits threaten large-scale nuclear expansion. Harrell also noted the rising electricity demand and called for predictable, efficient regulatory pathways to ensure the US can more rapidly deploy next-generation reactors to support clean energy growth. “The need for new sources of reliable and affordable energy is urgent. The technologies are ready, but they will not be built if they cannot secure permits on a predictable, expeditious timeline.”–congressional testimony of Jeremy Harrell, CEO at ClearPath. The US relies heavily on imported uranium to fuel its nuclear reactors including Russia. As a result, the nation is actively seeking to diversify its uranium sources and enhance domestic production to mitigate risks associated with foreign dependence. Yet, this is not a simple process, especially with today’s permitting constraints. Panelists emphasized the need for public-private collaboration to fast-track clean, safe US energy projects, including nuclear, within a sustainable energy portfolio.
