Solemn Wednesday!! ?? TODAY IS PATRIOT DAY | 9/11. Author | C. Knighten There are many people who will read this and not remember the attacks on 9/11....they were small children or not even a twinkle in their parents eyes. On September 11, 2001, our country suffered a terrorist attack like none other. Yes, of course their is Pearl Harbor.....and the loss of life there was horrific and extreme.....but that attack was on our military, on war ships. The attack on 9/11 was designed to target innocent civilians. Civilians going about their daily lives; working the 9-5 to make a living. We celebrate this day in memory of all the innocents who were simply going to work, for all the extraordinary individuals who stepped up to help, for all the police men and women....for all the fire fighters, who all went 'above and beyond the call' ......so many lost their lives that day.....needlessly. ?? TERRORIST ATTACK ON 9.11.2001: There were a total of 4 planes that were used as flying bombs. Three of those planes were flown into buildings: 2 were flown into the The World Trade Centers in New York. The 3rd was flown into the Pentagon. in Washington, DC.....but the last, was miraculously felled in a field in Pennsylvania, due to the courage of civilians who forced it to crash. Speculation lends to the 4th plane targeting The White House, Camp David or possibly one of several nuclear power plants located along the eastern seaboard. Our President, George W. Bush, put all airports and flights on lock down....as our country sat in shock and horror of these terrifying attacks. Almost 3000 people perished either in the Towers, or during rescue efforts to aid the innocent. Each year on Patriot Day, U.S. flags are lowered to half mast, and we observe a Nationwide moment of silence at 8:46 Eastern Daylight Time in recognition of the time that the 1st plane struck the first Twin Tower. Today is celebrated to help you overcome your doubts and achieve what may seem improbable.... to stand up for what you believe in and "make it happen!! On this day we hope for what may seem impossible and focus on the positive of achieving such a lofty goal!! HISTORY OF NATIONAL WHEN PIGS FLY DAY: Today is a day for dreaming large and thinking about ways to overcome roadblocks in your path. It’s a day to imagine a future that may seem absurd and build a plan to take small steps forward.....a day for thinking outside of the box!?? Happy Labor Day!! ?? Author | C. Knighten According to the U.S. Department of Labor, we have been celebrating?? Labor Day as an official holiday, since 1894. While there were several states that adopted Labor Day and recognized it for several years prior to Congress finally voting it in as an Official Federal Holiday, it first celebrated in Oregon! HISTORY OF LABOR DAY: Before it was a federal holiday, Labor Day was recognized by labor activists and individual states. After municipal ordinances were passed in 1885 and 1886, a movement developed to secure state legislation. New York was the first state to introduce a bill, but Oregon was the first to pass a law recognizing Labor Day, on February 21, 1887. During 1887, four more states – Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York – passed laws creating a Labor Day holiday. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday, and on June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday. Note that there exists some controversy over whom first suggested 'Labor Day' to recognize American ??♂?????Workers. STORY ONE: In September 1882, the Knights of Labor, one of the largest and most important American labor organizations at the time, held a public parade in New York City, featuring various labor organizations. They were aided by the fledgling Central Labor Union (CLU) of New York. Subsequently, CLU Secretary Matthew Maguire, proposed that a national Labor Day holiday be held on the first Monday of each September to mark their successful public demonstration. STORY TWO: Labor Day in September was proposed by Peter J. McGuire, a vice president of the American Federation of Labor. In spring 1882, McGuire reportedly proposed a “general holiday for the laboring classes” to the CLU, which would begin with a street parade of organized labor solidarity and end with a picnic fundraiser for local unions. McGuire suggested the first Monday in September as an ideal date for Labor Day because the weather is great at that time of year, and it falls between July 4th and Thanksgiving. Regardless of which story you believe??....it is quite likely that there is some 'truth' to both sides.....we still have them all to 'thank' for this wonderful holiday recognizing all American workers and their contributions to making our Country, cities and towns wonderful places to live and raise our families!!???????? HOTTEST Wednesday!! ?? STAYING COOL DURING THE DOG??DAYS OF SUMMER! Author | C. Knighten Across the U.S. temperatures are rising to above normal levels for this summer. ?? In fact, several states have had 'record breaking heat. You might surprised to learn that some of those states record breakers, were below our averages here in Alabama. NEW RECORDS SET: ??California: 118.94 ??Nevada: 120.02 (a 3 degree jump) ?North Carolina: 105.98 in Morrisville and Raleigh with 106 ??Washington State: Lewiston and Omak with 107, however, on a much lower scale, Bellingham and Olympia broke daily records, respectively, of 88 and 100......temperatures that we have become accustomed to in recent years. In fact, I, personally would welcome 88 degrees on any day in the near future! Next, we all know that 'life' goes on no matter the temperature, however, it is better to ere on the side of caution than to have a heat stroke or experience heat exhaustion! TIPS TO PREVENT HEAT EXHAUSTION OR STROKE: ??Stay Hydrated! Drink plenty of water and eat high water content foods, like watermelon. ?? ??Dress appropriately. Wear loose fitting , breathable clothing like cotton and linen! ?Find Shade. Or stay indoors. Limit strenuous activity. Take frequent breaks to hydrate and cool down. ????Plan activities appropriately! Schedule outdoor activities for early morning or evening, to avoid over exertion during the hottest part of the day! TAKE CARE OF YOUR PETS: ?? Before walking your dog on a sidewalk or concrete.....put your hand down on the sidewalk....if it is too hot to keep your hand their for 20 seconds....it is too hot for your dogs paws! In fact, hot sidewalks/concrete can burn your dogs paws!! ??Keep them hydrated! Just like you, ensure that they have plenty of accessible water and ample shade if they are outdoors! **this applies to all outdoor animals! ??Offer them frozen treats! Frozen treats will help them cool down....just like you. ??Avoid strenuous exercise. If your dog is training or just playing fetch.....today is a good day to take a break or find an indoor facility with air conditioning! I'm just here to share interests of the day....and while there are a lot of holidays (over 150??) that celebrate dogs....I personally feel that they are worth every single one!! I don't recall a cat ever saving a life.??.....there are no 'rescue cats'?? or cats serving in our military??....let alone a single one of them that attempts to herd cattle ??or sheep??! This day encourages ownership of all breeds, from purebreds to mutts and everything in between! HISTORY OF NATIONAL DOG DAY! The old quote, "a dog is mans' best friend' may not hold so true, when you realize that it was a woman who first promoted this day in 2004. We can credit Colleen Paige, a Pet and Life Style Expert, and obvious animal advocate for bringing our attention to the number of dogs living in shelters. The 26th, today, commemorates the day her family adopted her Sheltie, when she only 10. While many days aim to find loving homes?? for dogs, this day expands that consideration to look beyond the breed. Look into their eyes, and see their hearts and soul. The purpose of the National Dog Day Foundation is to rescue 10,000 dogs each year. Since 2004, when this day was first recognized, nearly 1 Million dogs have been rescued from shelters in the U.S. alone.?? While this day was first brought to the fore front in New York City, it is now celebrated worldwide?? with the purpose of helping dogs in shelters find their forever home! GREAT WAYS TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL DOG DAY!! ????Do your research! If you are dead set on adopting a purebred dog, there are resources for finding them in shelters. Of all the elements in the world, water is one of the most utilized and required by....well, everything!! The Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) organizes an annual event to address numerous subjects in reference to water. Each year they share and discuss a wide range of the world’s water development and ongoing sustainability issues. HISTORY OF WORLD WATER WEEK: Water is as essential for life, as is oxygen! Though transparent it comes in many colors, and truly fresh water is divine to the taste! It is the main constituent of Earth’s hydrosphere and a large percentage of every known living organism. In fact, the human body is between 60-75% water. Water covers our planet and makes up 71% of the earths' overall surface. Water, as we know it, is unique to our planet amongst its sisters and brothers in our Solar System. We are the only planet to have liquid water on our surface, let alone oceans of it! This has created such a stir in the Scientific Community, that research focusing on the origin of water is being conducted in the fields of planetary science, astronomy, and astrobiology. Our world economy is extremely effected by access to water. Approximately 70% of the freshwater used by humans goes to agriculture, growing crops that sustain the world. Water also provides a mode of transportation to ship commodities, via rivers, lakes and expanses of ocean. Another major resource provided by water, is fish. More than 3 million people worldwide, depend on fish and seafood for vital nutrition. Both residentially and commercially, large quantities of water, ice, and steam are used for cooling and heating. It is also an excellent solvent for a wide variety of substances both mineral and organic. Where would we be without it to cook, bath and wash our clothing? GREAT WAYS TO CELEBRATE WORLD WATER WEEK: ?? Think Green....but not green water!?? Plastic water bottles create waste, plastic pollution, fossil fuel depletion and carbon emissions.
