However, the idea was first proposed in 2011 by the Hawthorne Police Department in California, as a way to build better relationships with their community. The first event was a casual gathering where police and community members could build relationships and discuss community issues over coffee ad their local McDonalds. During the event, Officers hear from the community about their security challenges and needs. The community liaises with their security officers, not just as public officers but also as allies in protecting and caring for the people of their town. If crime is to be abated, both the community and police officers must work together. Today, we celebrate Coffee with a Cop in all 50 states and it has become one of the most successful community-oriented policing programs in the United States. Breaking through the barriers of communication between officers and citizens is one of the major focuses for every community. Surprisingly, this celebration has expanded outside our borders to include: Canada, Europe, Australia, Africa and Latin America! Knighten Observed in October of each year, since 1986, the objective is built around showing people how they can work together in creating sustainable, carbon-neutral, and inclusive cities and towns. Today is a reminder that t is a reminder that we have control over the environment that we live in..... from reducing carbon monoxide emissions and observing proper waste management, to controlling urban greenhouse gases. Protecting the ecosystem we live in should be a top priority! History of World Habitat Awareness Month Dating back to 1946, a year after the WWII ended, group of ex-servicemen founded the East Midlands Housing Association (E.M.H.A.), led by Peter Elderfield. Their goal was to provide subsidized social housing and sell affordable residential homes. “There is no shortage of housing problems – what is needed are solutions,” Elderfield said. In 1976, the E.M.H.A. was replaced by the Building and Social Housing Foundation (B.S.H.F.)., with a focus on continuing their legacy. Their success has allowed them to build a global network of partnerships, including the United Nations Human Settlements Program (U.N.-Habitat). Every year, World Habitat Awareness Month is hosted by a different city from all around the world with a specific theme. RECYCLABLES: After steel, aluminum cans?? are the second most recycled material in the United States. Surprisingly, aluminum is 100% recyclable ! Wait, there's more.....additionally, it takes less energy....in fact, 95% less energy..... to recycle an old can into a new one, over making one from fresh materials! Regardless of this, we are still throwing out more than 1 million tons of aluminum each year. ????While there are some materials that can only be recycled once, aluminum stands out in the crowd, because it can be recycled over and over!?? RECYCLING BY THE NUMBERS: ??In 2010, if all the aluminum cans recycled, were laid end-to-end, they could circle the earth ??169 times. ??The U.S. recycles about 65% of its aluminum. ??In America, 105,800 cans are recycled every minute. ??Your television?? can run for 3 hours from the energy ??saved by recycling one can.??(WOW!!) ??80 Billion Sodas, from cans, are consumed in the U.S. each year! ??Currently, we recycle around 620,000 tons of aluminum each year! ??Shockingly enough, though.....we throw away enough aluminum to rebuild the U.S. Commercial Air ??Fleet every 3 months!! Knighten Flying straight in from Metropolis, National Comic Book Day arrives with a sonic boom ( I couldn't use the planet Krypton...it exploded in 1948!)! Today is September 25th and we celebrate this day to bring awareness to the many wonderful and awful characters playing on both sides of the law, who have filled our imaginations and now grace our movie theatres! HISTORY OF COMIC BOOKS: From it's meager beginnings, this genre has now grown into graphic novels, and countless movie adaptations. First landing in America, in 1842 with the arrival of the Swiss Comic, The Adventures of Mr. Obadiah Oldbuck, comics planted themselves into our daily lives. In the early 20th century, proto-comics began appearing as standard-sized comic books beginning with Funnies on Parade. In 1938, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster ushered in the 'Golden Age of Comics" when they introduced the world to Superman??! Once a small player, was turned into a major industry! During this era or possible nuclear war and atomic power, the characters featured in comic books, helped ease the minds of children, according to Historian Michael A. Amundson. FOUR MAJOR ERAS OF COMIC BOOKS: ??The Golden Age | 1938-1954 The beginning of the genre'. ??The Silver Age | 1956-early 1970's Arrives with the successful debut of the Flash! ??The Bronze Age | 1970's - 1986 Marvel Comics revolutionizes the medium with the introductions of the Fantastic Four and Spider-Man! ??The Modern Age of Comics | 1986 - Present While this era flourished, it is often called the Dark Age of Comic Books, due the of many titles with serious content, such as Batman: The Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen. NOTE: Steve Geppi, the founder of Diamond Comics, however proposes that there should be additional eras added to the timeline. Two prior to the Golden Age, called: Victorian Age: 1828 to 1882 | Platinum Age: 1882 to 1938. And the following: Atom Age: 1946 to 1956 | Copper Age: 1986 to 1992 | Chrome Age: 1992 to 1999. CAPTURING OUR HEARTS IN 1952! We celebrate this day, because of the speech President Nixon made In 1952. A day that stands in infamy and changed the course of a presidential election. Richard Nixon used television (still in its infancy), on September 23 1952, to address nearly 60 million viewers — the largest audience at the time! Later dubbed the “Checkers Speech”, Nixon refuted charges that he had abused campaign contributions. During his speech, he referenced his children and Checkers the family's, black and white cocker spaniel. To say that he pulled the 'heartstrings' of American during that speech, is an understatement. However, he managed to stay on the ballot with Dwight D. Eisenhower, running for Vice-President! Happy Monday!! ?? IT'S RECYCLE AWARENESS?? WEEK! Author | C Knighten Recycle Awareness Week is celebrated every year for a full week in September. This year, we celebrate from September 16th to 22nd, to help bring awareness to the many benefits that recycling offers for our earth??, worldwide! It is an opportunity to become more aware of our environment, nature in general and how it should function together to become healthier. There are many material that can be recycled: such as paper, glass, plastic bottles, juice and milk cartons, cans of various sizes. It is a simple and effective way to make the world a better place. HISTORY OF RECYCLING: Recycling is much older than you might have imagined. One of the earliest records of paper recycling dates back to Japan, in 1031. Private estate owners, during the Heian Period, built paper mills to recycle used waste paper in an effort to conserve materials and maximize the use. In Philadelphia in 1690, America’s first paper mill used old fabrics, clothes, cotton, and linen to produce recycled paper. This mill operated until the 1800's, repurposing used materials for paper. The statue of King George III in New York City was utilized during the Revolutionary War of 1776 in a most unique way. His statue was demolished, melted, and converted into 42,088 bullets to aid the war effort. More could have been 'recycled' had an angry crowd not demolished his head?! In 1813, Benjamin Law invented the cumbersome process of recycling wool from old clothes and rags. He collected rags, ground them and then re-spun the material into yarn. By 1860, Law had produced over 7,000 tons of recycled wool. New York City established its first materials recovery facility in 1897, to make collection a much faster process. GREAT REASONS TO RECYCLE: ??Recycling cardboard saves oil! A single ton of recycled cardboard saves 46 gallons of oil! ??Go GREEN! Nearly 80% of retailers and grocers in the U.S., recycle cardboard. ??Maximizing Energy! Recycling one ton of cardboard can save 390 kilowatt hours (kWh) of energy! This equates to almost 75% of the energy needed to make new cardboard. ??100% Recyclable! Glass can be 100% recycled. Which makes me wonder why our fine city has not opened an extension to our recycling program!?? ??Recycling plastic is HUGE! Recycling plastic saves around 66% of energy. A ton of plastic can save up to 5,774 Kilowatt-hours of energy, 1,000 to 2,00 gallons of gasoline, 30.4 cubic yards of landfill space, and 16 barrels of oil!!???? Solemn Wednesday!! ?? TODAY IS PATRIOT DAY | 9/11. Author | C. Knighten There are many people who will read this and not remember the attacks on 9/11....they were small children or not even a twinkle in their parents eyes. On September 11, 2001, our country suffered a terrorist attack like none other. Yes, of course their is Pearl Harbor.....and the loss of life there was horrific and extreme.....but that attack was on our military, on war ships. The attack on 9/11 was designed to target innocent civilians. Civilians going about their daily lives; working the 9-5 to make a living. We celebrate this day in memory of all the innocents who were simply going to work, for all the extraordinary individuals who stepped up to help, for all the police men and women....for all the fire fighters, who all went 'above and beyond the call' ......so many lost their lives that day.....needlessly. ?? TERRORIST ATTACK ON 9.11.2001: There were a total of 4 planes that were used as flying bombs. Three of those planes were flown into buildings: 2 were flown into the The World Trade Centers in New York. The 3rd was flown into the Pentagon. in Washington, DC.....but the last, was miraculously felled in a field in Pennsylvania, due to the courage of civilians who forced it to crash. Speculation lends to the 4th plane targeting The White House, Camp David or possibly one of several nuclear power plants located along the eastern seaboard. Our President, George W. Bush, put all airports and flights on lock down....as our country sat in shock and horror of these terrifying attacks. Almost 3000 people perished either in the Towers, or during rescue efforts to aid the innocent. Each year on Patriot Day, U.S. flags are lowered to half mast, and we observe a Nationwide moment of silence at 8:46 Eastern Daylight Time in recognition of the time that the 1st plane struck the first Twin Tower.
