“A groundbreaking new piece of legislation to designate the largest Marine Protected Area network in the North Atlantic has just been passed, marking a historic milestone to safeguard 30% of the sea surrounding the Azores archipelago” shares Oceanographic Magazine. “Marine Protected Areas are widely recognised as the most effective tool in the global effort to reverse biodiversity loss and build ocean resilience against climate change. A groundbreaking new study by Dynamic Planet and National Geographic Pristine Seas reveals that the world needs 85 new Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) every day for the next 6 years to reach the global target of conserving 30% of the ocean by 2030 - in national waters alone. Despite country pledges, only 8% of our oceans are currently in some form of protection. The report proposes a scalable, cost-effective pathway to urgently ramp up effective coastal marine protection–where environmental and social benefits are greatest! With the United Nations Biodiversity COP16 convening next week, these findings are a powerful reality check. Exciting news! Uruguay has announced the creation of a marine park around Isla de Lobos - a small island off Punta del Este whose waters are teeming with life. This haven for ocean species is also home to one of South America's largest sea lion colonies. The creation of Isla de Lobos National Park, which was signed into law late last week by President Luis Lacalle Pou, is a step forward in Uruguay's goal to boost ocean protection from 1% to 10% by 2025. On average, Small Island Developing States' national waters (the area of the ocean that is under their jurisdiction and within their exclusive economic zone, or EEZ) is 28 times their land mass. They rely heavily on their marine resources for their livelihoods and economies, but the ocean?also plays?important roles in island nations' histories, cultures, and sense of place. Small Island Developing States - or Large Ocean States - as they more accurately like to call themselves, are critical partners in our collective global quest for a healthy, protected, and thriving ocean.
