The first study to measure the full economic cost of bottom trawling in Europe’s waters (the EU, UK, Norway and Iceland) shows that the damaging fishing practice imposes up to €10.8 billion in annual costs to society, largely due to massive carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from disturbed seafloor sediments. The study finds that while bottom trawling currently supports jobs, provides protein and brings in revenue, the costs far exceed the benefits. The new research comes as a coalition of civil society organizations calls on the governments of Europe and the UK to ban bottom trawling in the continent’s marine protected areas (MPAs) — spots that are meant to be safe havens for marine life. Currently, sixty percent of European MPAs are bottom trawled, and 13% of the bottom trawling effort in Europe happens inside MPAs (20% for the EU). Coral reefs harbor more biodiversity than any other ocean ecosystem, provide food security for millions of people, and protect our shores from devastating tropical storms. If we are to preserve them and all the benefits they provide, we need to give them space. As the world tries to agree on how to reduce carbon pollution, we can buy time by protecting reefs and fostering their strength. The difference between a dead reef and a super reef lies in how much we care.

First Nations along British Columbia's coast, in collaboration with the federal government, announced the creation of Canada's largest marine protected area in 2024, covering an astounding 133,000 square kilometers. Located about 150 km off the west coast of Vancouver Island, this protected area is a treasure trove of ocean wonders. This monumental achievement not only safeguards these extraordinary underwater ecosystems but also highlights the power of collective action and collaboration. ?Join us as we highlight Good News for the Ocean from 2024. Throughout December, we’ll share stories of hope and progress, reminding us of the collective victories achieved in 2024 and preparing us for continued efforts in the year ahead.? This year, Puerto Rico celebrated a significant environmental victory with the establishment of a new marine protected area (MPA) covering two hundred square kilometers of coastal coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass habitats. This 'small but mighty' MPA will support vibrant local fisheries and ecotourism industries. Local communities are optimistic that co-managing the MPA will ensure its waters continue to provide food and income for generations. ??
