#GAC2024: Last weekend, the German American Conference took place in #Boston, an annual event organized by the dedicated students at the Harvard University Kennedy School. The conference brought together leaders, innovators, and academics from both sides of the Atlantic to exchange ideas and explore collaborative solutions to global challenges. As part of the program, Jan Lüdert, Ph.D., Head of Programs at #DWIHNY, and Anette Wu Fortgang, Associate Professor at Columbia University, led a thought-provoking workshop titled "Internationalization of Medical Education: Sustainable Ideas to Support Science Diplomacy and Improve Health for All." The session sparked meaningful conversations about how international collaboration in medical education can contribute to advancing global health equity. Simultaneously, DWIH NY Director Christian Strowa moderated an engaging panel discussion on "Meritoversy: Does a Merit-Based Higher Education System Work?" The panel featured Miriam Farnbauer, Program Director at DIAG USA, Manuel J. Hartung, CEO and Chairman of the Executive Board of ZEIT STIFTUNG BUCERIUS, Daniel Kramer, Director of the Fulbright Association U.S. Student Program, Institute of International Education, and Daniel Markovits, Author of “The Meritocracy Trap”, Professor of Law at the Yale Law School, Founding Director of the Yale University Center for the Study of Private Law. Together, they explored the complexities of meritocracy in education systems, debating its benefits, challenges, and implications for the future of higher learning. The conference was also a hub for networking and community building. On Friday evening, our leadership organization DAAD German Academic Exchange Service and Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes, hosted a vibrant and well-attended networking event. Over 100 grant holders and alumni gathered to connect, exchange ideas, and reflect on the first day of this dynamic conference. The evening provided a valuable opportunity to strengthen ties within the German American academic and professional communities.

Focused on innovation and sustainability, the “Germany on Campus” symposium at University of Connecticut last Thursday highlighted why #Connecticut and UConn provide the perfect ecosystem for globally-minded engineering and business students. #Germany is Connecticut’s #1 economic partner, with many German world leaders in precision manufacturing calling Connecticut their U.S. home. UConn’s dual-degree programs, EUROTECH and EUROBIZ, prepare students for careers with these companies by equipping them with essential skills and international perspectives. Jan Lüdert, Ph.D., Head of Programs at #DWIHNY, delivered the keynote address,?“Transatlantic Innovations: Building Intercultural Citizenship Across the Disciplines.”?He emphasized the importance of innovation in intercultural relations, stating: "To be truly innovative, you must see your role as more than a job title or a collection of skills. Each project you work on is a chance to bridge differences and create new understandings." Dr. Sonja Kreibich, General Consul of Germany to the New England States at the German Consulate Boston opened the company panel with Dr. Christine Benz (TRUMPF North America), Marie-Anne Caye (Henkel), Peter Tolmei (ebm-papst), Jonathan Leach and Dave Gould (MTU Aero Engines North America), Michael Haaser and Will Trickett (Stopa America Inc) and Tom Siemieniak and Sujan Guhathakurta (fischer fixings LLC) moderated by Ted Fisher (AdvanceCT). Thanks to the University of Connecticut and Anke K. Finger for organizing such an outstanding showcase for EUROTECH and EUROBIZ. “Germany on Campus” is?a program of the Embassy of Germany in Washington, D.C.

???? Last week, #DWIHNY Director Christian Strowa, DAAD Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst Vice President Muriel Helbig, and Head of Programs Jan Lüdert, Ph.D. attended German Science Week at the Embassy of Germany in Washington, D.C. Did you know that, like the U.S., Germany is a global leader in science and research? Germany is among the few countries to invest over 3% of its GDP in research and development, allocating €121.4 billion to R&D in 2022 alone. With 115 Nobel Prize laureates either born or based in Germany, we rank third in global Nobel achievements. In the past decade, German scientists have received nine Nobel Prizes—all in chemistry, physics, or medicine. At a symposium titled Germany—Science Powerhouse: Cutting-Edge Research and Innovation in Turbulent Times, and a lunch hosted by Ambassador Michaelis, speakers addressed topics ranging from Germany’s distinctive research funding landscape to the crucial role of science diplomacy in an era of technological disruption. The week’s consistent message was clear: Both the U.S. and Germany are at the forefront of scientific advancement, making our collaboration a true win-win."
