Operation Iraqi Freedom Began (2003) Today marks the 20th anniversary of the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom with preemptive airstrikes on Saddam Hussein’s Presidential Palace and military targets followed by approximately 67,700 “boots on the ground” with 15,000 Navy personnel on ships in the region. We remember all the lives lost not only in battle but the thousands of innocent people, many of them women and children who died. Like what we share? ?? U.S. Military Academy at West Point founded (1802) On this day in 1802, The United States Military Academy—the first military school in the United States—was founded by Congress to educate and train young men in the theory and practice of military science. The academy is now under the general direction and supervision of the department of the U.S. Army and has an enrollment of more than 4,000 students.
