关于我们
The Durfee Foundation is a family foundation that seeks to adhere to the values of our founders, Dorothy Durfee Avery and R. Stanton Avery, by rewarding individual initiative and leadership. The majority of our grantmaking focuses on the Los Angeles region, where the foundation’s history lies, and where funding needs are great. We build partnerships with individuals and institutions that share our ideals of creativity, risk-taking, fiscal care, integrity, entrepreneurial spirit and continuous learning We seek to build community in unexpected ways. We make grants where our dollars will have the greatest impact. We hope that Durfee funds provide leverage for other funding opportunities. Durfee is a patient investor. We are willing to make grants where the outcome may be hard to measure or not measurable for many years. Above all, Durfee’s focus is on extraordinary people who make things happen.

Today has been joyous. I am thrilled and humbled to have been selected as the Durfee Foundation’s next CEO. I am grateful to the Durfee board of trustees for the inclusive and transparent selection process they pursued. Theo Avery, our board chair, has been wonderful to work with and I look forward to our future partnership. Claire Peeps and Carrie Avery changed my life when they came to Boyle Heights to meet with me back in 2002. Serving as an Executive Director can be a very lonely experience. You feel as though you are carrying the weight of the world and despite all your effort, progress is slow, and sometimes you are vilified by the forces that live by the zero sum game. You lack peers within the organization and you may not have a network of support. At least, that was my experience as an ED for nearly 16 years. The Durfee Foindation gave me the opportunity for renewal through a sabbatical and then they gave me a beautiful gift that’s never lost it’s shine—an entire community of Executive Directors from across Los Angeles County who understood what I was feeling as a leader. The Durfee community of fellows is a place I can tap into for joy, for kinship, for love. For that, I will be forever grateful to Carrie Avery, Claire Peeps, and Stan and Dorothy Avery. ?? Thank you to all the folks that reached out to say congratulations. I am not on social media very often and I rarely post, but today is special. I start my new role on January 1st. Abrazos all around ??????

We have embarked upon planned leadership transitions and seek a new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The CEO will lead a family- and community-oriented organization that is primed to thrive in its next evolution. Reporting to the Board of Directors - composed of multigenerational family members and community members outside of the family - the CEO will manage the foundation’s small, dedicated team. The CEO will bring personal commitment to and passion for gaining and sharing knowledge, engaging deeply with community stakeholders, and supporting nonprofit leadership across Los Angeles County.?

Our former President, Carrie Avery, and our very own Stella Chung, Director of Program and Operations, contributed to the Stanford Social Innovation Review’s feature on trust-based philanthropy. Their article reflects on the importance of engaging in a trust-based approach to support the rest and renewal of nonprofit leaders. You can access the article below:?https://lnkd.in/gfigQWZT
The trust-based philanthropy movement has grown in rapid time, but there are still basic misunderstandings about this approach and its bold vision for a more just and democratic society. In a new supplement sponsored by the Trust-Based Philanthropy Project, authors examine what a trust-based approach really means, why it is essential to effective philanthropy, and what will be possible if more funders embrace it ? https://lnkd.in/eaQTUnNx Read about how these leaders and organizations are approaching philanthropy differently: ??Shaady Salehi and Pia Infante of the Trust-Based Philanthropy Project; Nat Williams and Elizabeth Bonner of the Hill-Snowdon Foundation; Lorrie Fair Allen, Ashlee George, and Charlize Theron of the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project; John Brothers (John B.) of the T. Rowe Price Foundation; Carrie Avery and Stella Chung of the Durfee Foundation; Sarah Walczyk of the Satterberg Foundation; and Jamie Allison and Jennifer C. Haas (Jennifer C. H.) of the Walter & Elise Haas Fund The complete seven-article series is available online to everyone now: https://lnkd.in/eaQTUnNx #trustbasedphilanthropy #trust #philanthropy #giving #equity
