The Hidden Epidemic: The Crisis Affecting Seniors & Communities Most people don’t realize there’s a growing crisis affecting thousands of older adults in our community: food insecurity, social isolation, and lack of access to essential care. At DSCC, we see this reality every day: ?? Seniors skipping meals because they can’t afford food. ?? Individuals going days without human contact, leading to depression and declining health. ?? Caregivers—often working professionals—struggling to balance jobs while supporting aging loved ones. The ripple effect? It strains healthcare systems, disrupts workplaces, and weakens our local economy. But we can change this. Our programs, like home-delivered meals, wellness checks, and companionship visits, provide a lifeline—but we need more businesses, organizations, and individuals to help. In our latest article, we explore: ?? The real impact of senior food insecurity and isolation. ?? Why this issue is closer to home than many realize. ?? The role of businesses and community leaders in being part of the solution. A Small Step Toward Community Commitment Did you or your organization promise to being more committed to serving the community and being more connected to the community this year? Most organizations make this promise at the end of last year but about this time, they've forgotten to take a step towards that goal. We can help you take that important first step AND you'll be helping us tackle an epidemic. Did you know social isolation affects nearly one in four seniors, leading to serious health risks and a loss of connection with the world around them? In fact, the numbers show that social isolation among seniors is at epidemic levels and is only projected to worsen. The effects of social isolation are critical for seniors. DuPage Senior Citizens Council and Kane Senior Council are at the forefront of addressing this problem. Through programs like Friendly Visits and Phone Calls, Home Delivered Meals and others, we connect with seniors to meet their needs AND combat social isolation. By engaging volunteers, we also help others meet their personal and professional goals of helping others in the community. Let us help you take that first step in helping others. Inquire about volunteering with us or joining DSCC as a corporate partner. By joining us you’ll help build a community where every senior feels seen, heard, connected and cared for. DSCC and KSC Achieve SAGECare Platinum Certification At DSCC and KSC, we believe in creating a world where every senior is treated with dignity, respect, and compassion. That's why we're proud to announce that we’ve achieved SAGECare Platinum Certification, the highest recognition for our commitment to inclusivity for LGBTQ+ older adults. Why is this so important? Because the needs of LGBTQ+ seniors are growing, and the challenges they face require care and understanding: ?? Growing Population: There are currently 3 million LGBTQ+ adults over age 50 in the U.S., and this number is expected to more than double to 7 million by 2030. ?? Social Isolation: LGBTQ+ seniors face higher rates of social isolation, increasing the risk of physical and mental health issues. ?? Healthcare Disparities: Many avoid seeking medical care due to fears of discrimination, leading to unmet health needs. ?? Economic Insecurity: LGBTQ+ older adults are disproportionately affected by poverty, with fewer financial resources and access to spousal benefits. This certification isn’t just about recognition—it’s about action. Through the comprehensive training provided by SAGE, our staff have gained the skills and knowledge to: ?? Foster Inclusivity: Create welcoming environments where all seniors feel safe, valued, and supported. ?? Address Unique Needs: Tailor our services to meet the distinct challenges of LGBTQ+ older adults. ?? Build Trust: Strengthen relationships with diverse communities, ensuring our care reflects their unique experiences. By achieving SAGECare Platinum Certification, DSCC and KSC reaffirm our commitment to serving all seniors with the compassion and care they deserve. Thank you to our dedicated team for embracing this mission and to SAGE for their leadership in promoting inclusivity in senior services. Together, we’re building a brighter future for every senior. #DSCC #KSC #SAGECare #Inclusivity #LGBTQSeniors #PlatinumCertified #ServingWithPurpose

Where do you rank on the impatient “waitlist”? DuPage Senior Citizens Council and Kane Senior Council are Meals on Wheels program providers in DuPage and Kane counties.
Americans don’t want to wait more than 29 minutes for meal delivery, yet many seniors wait 3 months or more to access nutritious meals. Imagine if waiting for food wasn’t just frustrating but a daily struggle for survival. Our recent survey shows nearly two-thirds of us worry about an older loved one’s health, loneliness or access to proper nutrition. Meals on Wheels can help, but support is needed to reach more seniors on waitlists. Wondering why they're waiting so long? Read more here: #EndTheWait
