TARIFF UPDATE: President Donald Trump has decided to exempt Mexican and Canadian goods covered by the USMCA from his proposed 25% tariffs, granting a significant reprieve to the U.S.’s top trading partners following pressure from their leaders and U.S. auto executives. The tariffs will be paused until April 2, 2025. While automobiles and parts meeting USMCA standards will avoid the tariffs to protect the integrated North American auto industry, 62% of Canadian imports (mainly energy at 10%) and half of Mexican goods will still face duties. However, these figures may shift as importers adapt.
