  • We have a couple directions we can go. Option one helps fulfill the vision of NE MN being a national hub for innovation and technology. Option two is a death spiral. We need everyone on board with option one! 1. We have the capacity to have a lot of housing in the downtown and create more of an 18-hour downtown where you’ve got people who are working and then dining and recreating in that same area 2. The alternative is you continue to slowly erode at the number of office workers, at the number of retail stores, and then that becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, where it just becomes emptier and emptier. https://lnkd.in/gt8-DfkX

NE MN is poised to become America’s next hub of innovation and technology – from the “picks and shovels” industries to cutting-edge AI. The vision for this region’s future is as bold as achievable. Why NE MN? Few places can match our unique mix of natural resources, climate advantages, and forward-looking opportunities. * Unparalleled natural resources: Pulsar Helium Inc's Topaz site contains the highest known concentrations of helium in the world – a high-demand resource that fuels critical industries from healthcare (MRIs) to semiconductors and space tech. This discovery sits in a region with 150 years of mining heritage and know-how. We have the raw materials and the skilled workforce to supply and build the technologies of the future. * Favorable climate for tech: NE MN’s climate is an economic advantage. Data centers here would enjoy 300 days a year with free cooling thanks to naturally low temps, cutting costs dramatically. Add a low risk of natural disasters and abundant clean water, and you have an ideal environment for industries like AI supercomputing, biotech, and advanced manufacturing. * Lake Superior: Lake Superior offers huge “blue economy” potential. The Duluth Seaway Port Authority already supports a thriving maritime industry, and now innovators are exploring wave-powered energy and freshwater tech on the lake. In a world looking for sustainable solutions, we can lead in marine tech and water innovation, leveraging what is in our backyard. * Rise of AI and innovation: The global boom in AI and digital tech is a wave that our region is ready to catch. From developing AI tools for our foundational industries (imagine smarter mining operations and mineral processing) to hosting data centers and R&D facilities, NE MN can be where “picks and shovels” meet pixels and software. We have the talent pipeline (Lake Superior College, The College of St. Scholastica, Natural Resources Research Institute at University of Minnesota) and the affordable, quality lifestyle to attract and retain innovators who might be priced out of Silicon Valley. This amounts to a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for us. Chamber Board Chair, Dr. Chiamaka Enemuoh and our board recognize this - world-class resources, a strong industrial base, emerging tech talent, and increasing global demand – all aligning in our favor. But this moment won’t last forever. We can position our region at the forefront of the next tech and economic wave, but if we hesitate, it will slip away, and with it, the potential to transform our economy for decades. Let’s harness our helium, climate, lake, and ingenuity to put NE MN on the map as a premier innovation hub. Investors, entrepreneurs, and community leaders: come be part of this vision. Invest, build startups, expand operations – help us write the next great chapter of innovation - right here. Ready to get involved? • It was an incredible day of empowerment, learning, and togetherness at the inaugural Draw a Larger Circle: Expanding Inclusion in the Workplace Summit today at the College of St. Scholastica. Attendees began the day with self-reflection about their own identities and perspectives with Jesse Ross and unlocking the power of their own protagonism with Claire Branksy, followed by the Knowing Your Neighbors: Global Perspectives Panel led by Dr. M. Lue from the City of Duluth in which longtime and newly-arrived Duluth residents from countries around the world offered their unique insights as to how Duluth can become a more welcoming community to newcomers. Over the lunch hour, attendees engaged with an interactive discussion about Jodi Pfarr’s book The Urgency of Awareness led by Jaton White of Northside Achievement Zone followed by Raven & Cam from the Transgenda Podcast joining the group to talk about effective allyship. Sara Cole (Chamber Board Member), President & CEO of the Duluth Area Family YMCA, then took us home with a call to action and ideas how to continue this critical inclusion work in our community. Thank you so much to Lake Superior College and the The College of St. Scholastica for their partnership, our fantastic speakers for lending their time and talents, Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development for the grant funding that supports these events, and the 70+ local leaders and students who joined us today to show their commitment to this work. Our team is excited to offer this Inclusion Summit again in 2026!
