Some seafarers are rarely home for the holidays. For those who call at the Port of Duluth-Superior between now and Christmas, the Twin Ports Ministry to Seafarers provides a welcome gift of holiday cheer. These boxes, filled with homemade knitted caps, scarves and other goodies from congregations throughout the region, help deliver glad tidings to those who sail the seas delivering for us. It’s a holiday tradition shared across multiple U.S. ports, including those in Albany, Baltimore, New Haven, New York and New Jersey, through the generosity of Seafarers International House. Seventy years ago this week, in 1954, Arthur M. Clure was elected president of the newly reorganized Duluth Port Authority. Emerging from a 12-year hiatus initiated by World War II, the organization aimed to position Duluth as a key cog in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway System, which at that time, was still a vision for the future. Clure’s first official business, according to the meeting minutes, was to request purchase of a filing cabinet and folders “for a sum not to exceed $75.” A discussion followed about “the potential for package freight business in and out of the port.” Today, this is more commonly called “breakbulk” cargo, and it does indeed flow in and out of the port, primarily through our award-winning multimodal logistics hub: the Arthur M. Clure Public Marine Terminal.

Since the construction of Duluth’s first grain elevator in 1869, these lakeshore giants have played a prominent role on our working waterfront. Today, the Port of Duluth-Superior is home to six active grain terminals and we’re hosting operators from each of them for a deep dive on maritime facility security with Kevin Gilheany of Maritime Compliance International.

Our Clure Public Marine Terminal is built to handle huge, high-value cargoes. This most recent arrival, a 121-ton industrial piece from Italy, sailed in Saturday aboard the ??-colored ??????????????????????. It's been a very good season thus far for general cargo shipments in the Port of Duluth-Superior, with tonnage tracking 4.5 times ahead of the 2023 pace.

Ahoy! University of Wisconsin-Superior transportation and logistics management student Joel Lembke arrived in style yesterday while learning about maritime shipping aboard the Royal Wagenborg freighter ??????????????. After sailing under Duluth’s Aerial Lift Bridge, the Dutch-flagged ship called at Hansen-Mueller Company Elevator A for a load of beet pulp pellets. If you're interested in providing these kinds of learning experiences for college students, please consider joining the Duluth-Superior Maritime Club, which funds two scholarships for students enrolled in the UWS transportation and logistics management program.
