Last week was #AIHype week in my Graduate Liberal Studies at Duke University Duke University Graduate School course 'AI and the Future of Human History'! #CriticalAI #AILiteracy #genAI #AIassistants We talked about the movie 'Her' and the #fauxscarjo #OpenAI #debacle We read Alice Goguen Hunsberger's fabulous post "It's time to end the 'default male'" https://lnkd.in/eWQynCH9 And...we explored hype, power and narrative: Does Sam Altman’s act of? tweeting “her” prime us to see his product as such? It sure does. And that’s exactly what he was doing, as we’ve seen above. Does the hype really matter? It sure does: “Influencing Human-AI interaction by priming beliefs about AI can increase perceived trustworthiness, empathy and effectiveness” https://lnkd.in/eyTPmiRB (by Pat Pataranutaporn, Ruby Liu, Ed Finn, and Pattie Maes) So when Sam Altman primes us and that priming adds to the hype, we end up using his product as he’s primed us to do… "Here’s how people are actually using AI? Something peculiar and slightly unexpected has happened: people have started forming relationships with AI systems." https://lnkd.in/e7V6tsS7 (by Melissa Heikkil? via MIT Technology Review) And about digital Assistants/Agents like Her? They’re here: "Anthropic’s AI now lets you create bots to work for you / It can buy shoes, read emails, or do whatever you want." https://lnkd.in/eBsdkAQU (by Kylie Robison via The Verge) And here’s an excellent overview from one of my favorite research orgs, Ada Lovelace Institute: "AI assistants Helpful or full of hype?" https://lnkd.in/erM99WeV (by Julia Smakman) We can chat too about the fine line between digital GenAI assistants and deep- or truefakes. In fact, there’s this whole “#digitaltwin” thing happening now, which feels like a you-based digital assistant/agent: digital twin (note they’re not using the word “clone” - because, let’s be honest, that comes with some baggage. They’re calling them twins, which sounds cute, or them '#truefakes’ which makes them sound…trustworthy?)?https://lnkd.in/ednd2KpA (also by Melissa Heikkil? via MIT Technology Review)...(digital twin also means a host of other things depending on the field or context) Let’s say you dig the idea of Her, would you want a digital assistant that was YOU? …Me, not so much, but this fellow seems very proud of his - check it out and try not to be uncomfortable Reid Hoffman meets his #AItwin - ?? (Note Reid Hoffman is the cofounder of LinkedIn, Inflection AI, and has a deep history of involvement in other Silicon Valley clubs). He now regularly interviews ‘with’ his AI, which is something? https://lnkd.in/eRECq5ai

This is the kind of inspiring work we love to see coming from our program! Check out what Eyram G. Klu, CSPO is up to and how he engages in interdisciplinary work across campus to tackle timely questions about #AI #DigitalCulture and #Ethics #teamgls Duke University Duke University Graduate School
For exactly what topic could an eclectic group of AI military researchers, software developers, consultants, scholars, educators, philosophers, theologians, and an ordained Dominican Friar come together for a week-long seminar at Duke University? #AI, #Ethics, and #HumanFlourishing. Our marquee event at the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club with an empowering keynote speech by Distinguished Professor Thomas Pfau captured the reality of how rapidly our world is changing and the urgent need for a united ethical front to preserve and promote human flourishing above anything else. I want to thank Peter Tierney, Professor Peter Casarella, and Professor Paul Scherz for putting together an invaluable tome of relevant literature to the topic of human flourishing from the best academic minds considering the pressing issues facing our society in this ever-evolving #DigitalWorld. Being accepted into this awesome week full of socratic seminars, daily liturgy at the Duke Chapel, and an edge-of-the-seat comeback win Durham Bulls Baseball game was a blast. We got to analyze texts such as #Pope Francis' recent address on AI at the G7 Summit, chapters from the Encountering Artificial Intelligence Research book put out by the #Vatican Centre for Digital Culture of the Dicastery for Culture & Education, and many #multidisciplinary works from the likes of Zuboff, McLuhan, Turing, Weizenbaum, Aquinas, Turkle, Schneiderman, Schulman, Searle, Vallor, Carr, MacIntyre – the list goes on. I am eager to continue reflecting and writing after this formative experience by continuing my part-time Master of Arts in Graduate Liberal Studies at Duke University this fall by taking the Ethical Technology Praticum with Senior Lecturing Fellow Dr. Tommy Sowers. Stay Tuned! Eyram
