关于我们

Welcome to The Thomas Lord Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at Duke University. Since our founding almost 90 years ago, Duke MEMS has been teaching students to engineer solutions to make the world a better place. Today we're home to more than 400 undergraduate and graduate students, studying in exciting areas of mechanical engineering and materials science, including energy, aerospace, soft matter, biomechanics, scientific modeling and computing, and reliable autonomous technology. At Duke MEMS, students work with top faculty even as undergraduates—doing independent projects as a Pratt Research Fellow, or working on teams, such as Duke Robotics, Duke Electric Vehicles, or Duke Motorsports. Our students have access to incredible maker spaces and resources, such as the Innovation Co-Lab, The Foundry, the Shared Materials Instrumentation Facility, and the garage labs in our new Wilkinson Building. Our students have access to incredible maker spaces and resources, such as the Innovation Co-Lab, The Foundry, the Shared Materials Instrumentation Facility, and the garage labs in our new Wilkinson Building. We’re leading the development and application of state-of-the-art computational tools like AI and machine learning to design new materials and develop new mechanical systems. I'm so proud that our department is now named in honor of Thomas Lord, a mechanical engineer whose investment in Duke Engineering decades ago has laid the foundation for faculty, staff, and students for decades to come. I invite you to explore our website to learn more, and sign up for our newsletter to stay tuned on all the latest from Duke MEMS.

M.S. Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science Student @ Duke University

As my first semester at Duke University Pratt School of Engineering progresses into its final stages, I want to share with everyone what I've been up to over the past couple of months! First, although the semester has been challenging as I get back into the academic mindset, I've had a wonderful experience here at Duke and am so grateful to be surrounded by such an exceptional community. I want to extend a special thank you to Dr. George Delagrammatikas for helping me and so many others integrate so well into this program, and to the Duke MEMS department as a whole for providing us with so many incredible opportunities! In my classes, I've been getting a multitude of hands-on experiences in mechanical design, robotics, and programming through multiple projects, most notably one where my Capstone team and I are building a climbing robot. Another highlight of the semester was attending the 2024 Society of Women Engineers conference in Chicago, where I and several other women engineers in my program were sponsored to attend! Regarding research work, I have just joined a project with Annika Lindstrom Haughey and the Surgical Education and Activities (SEAL) Lab, which aims to develop a camera-based assessment tool for laparoscopic camera navigation, using SLAM techniques to track movement through a simulated surgical maze. For extracurriculars, I was elected as a Senator for the Duke Graduate and Professional Student Government (GPSG), and as the M.S. Representative on the Engineering Graduate Student Council (EGSC). I have also continued my teaching journey as a TA for the undergraduate Mechanical Design course, and my mentoring journey by becoming a Pratt Peer. I'm so grateful for these experiences and eagerly looking forward to the rest of my journey here! Go Blue Devils!! #DukeMEMS
