This spring, 17 faculty members at Duke University School of Medicine were awarded distinguished professorships in recognition of their outstanding scholarship and commitment to advancing science and improving human health. https://lnkd.in/etS4yAvH Among them is Micah Luftig, PhD, professor and vice chair in the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology and Professor in Integrative Immunobiology. Dr. Luftig’s research explores the molecular mechanisms by which viruses, particularly Epstein-Barr virus, contribute to cancer — with the aim of informing both diagnostics and therapeutic interventions. Why do immunotherapies often fail in brain tumors? Research from IIB faculty member and Duke Center for Brain and Spine Metastasis (DCBSM) director Peter Fecci and his team suggests that T-cell exhaustion isn’t caused by tumor cells, but rather by infiltrating macrophages. Their study, published in the Cell Press journal, Immunity, introduces a new parameter—PETER—that may predict immunotherapy success and reveal new ways to boost treatment effectiveness.
