Recently, BPU President Guhl-Sadovy visited Duke Farms in Hillsborough, NJ recently, where they received a $296,000 award through New Jersey’s Clean Fleet Program. This funding will support the purchase of 16 Level 2 EV chargers and an electric vehicle, helping them further reduce their carbon footprint and promote sustainability. It’s inspiring to see how initiatives like this are making a real difference in our state’s transition to a greener future. Thank you to New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Chief Strategy Officer Kati Angarone and Duke Farms President Margaret Waldock for joining us! This year, I had the opportunity to speak at two significant events focused on advancing sustainability in historic preservation. At both the AIA 2024 Taliesin West Colloquium – Adaptation in Preservation: Concepts, Contrasts, and Collaboration and the 1772 Foundation’s Climate and Heritage Conservation panel at PastForward, the National Trust for Historic Preservation's 2024 National Preservation Conference, we explored the dynamic balance of preserving the built environment while actively contributing to a sustainable future. Duke Farms, a Center of the Doris Duke Foundation, exemplifies this approach with strategic pillars that prioritize restoring nature, demonstrating climate solutions, and engaging leaders. At Duke Farms, we are adaptively reusing historic buildings—creating spaces that honor the past while driving forward our mission for a more creative, equitable, and sustainable future. Through thoughtful integration of sustainable design with regenerative practices across our landscapes, we demonstrate that legacy properties can serve as living models of a “carbon negative, nature positive” vision. Since its inception, Duke Farms has transformed into a sustainable campus, rapidly reducing fossil fuel reliance across our operations. In 2024, we expanded this vision with a solar array and battery storage system that supplies 100% clean energy, enabling a fossil-fuel-free operation. Our approach includes carbon sequestration through forest and wetland management, regenerative agriculture, and other nature-based solutions across our 2,700 acres. These two events allowed me to share our commitment to adaptive reuse and sustainable land stewardship as essential components of a thriving, resilient campus. Duke Farms is proud to demonstrate how a property with deep historic roots can lead the way in creating campuses that set an inspiring standard for a carbon negative, nature positive future. #Sustainability #ClimateAction #HistoricPreservation #BuiltEnvironment #DukeFarms #AdaptiveReuse #CarbonNegative #NaturePositive #AIA #1772Foundation #Conservation #ClimateLeadership

Yesterday's seminar, "Rethinking New Jersey Environmental Funding: A Conversation with Chris Daggett," hosted by the Council of New Jersey Grantmakers' Environmental Funders Affinity Group, brought together key stakeholders to discuss the future of environmental philanthropy in New Jersey. Held in the main conference room at Duke Farms, the seminar featured insightful presentations by Chris Daggett, Bill Leavens, and F. M. Kirby Foundation Program Officer Elisheva Crowley, as well as Duke Farms Executive Director Margaret Waldock. Their discussions emphasized innovative strategies for addressing the state's past and present environmental challenges, while exploring opportunities for collaboration among funders to drive sustainable impact. Liz Crowley’s presentation underscored the importance of broadening our understanding of modern environmentalism, emphasizing the need to include a range of approaches that address both conservation and community well-being — reflecting the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to supporting initiatives at the intersection of environmental sustainability and social impact. We look forward to building on the ideas shared at the seminar and working alongside our partners to ensure a greener future for New Jersey.

We’re excited to announce that Duke Farms is a certified KultureCity Sensory Inclusive? venue! This certification ensures that our spaces and experiences are accessible and welcoming to individuals with sensory needs and invisible disabilities such as PTSD, autism, or dementia. Our entire visitor-facing team has been trained to provide support and resources, including Sensory Bags and clearly marked “Headphone Zones” to ensure everyone can fully enjoy and connect with nature here at Duke Farms. We are proud to partner with KultureCity to make our campus more inclusive for all members of our community.

Duke Farms is officially a KultureCity Sensory Inclusive? certified venue! KultureCity?is?the nation's leading nonprofit organization on sensory accessibility and acceptance for those with invisible disabilities. Sensory needs are a common medical condition in which the brain has trouble receiving and responding to information that comes in through the senses. 1 in 4 individuals has a sensory need or an invisible disability, such as PTSD, autism, or dementia. As a Sensory Inclusive? certified venue, 100% of Duke Farms’ visitor-facing staff have been trained by and received certification from KultureCity. We have posted signage that helps people with sensory needs effectively navigate our campus (ex. "Headphone Zone" signs signal areas that may overload one's senses, such as the Orientation Center on a very busy day!). And we provide visitors with access to Sensory Bags, which contain tools to help lessen sensory overload and engage with caretakers and Duke Farms staff. I'm so grateful to have been able to partner with KultureCity on behalf of Duke Farms to improve the accessibility of our campus!

It really is simple…and magical. That’s why at Doris Duke Foundation we’re all in for a #Forests4Climate moonshot in the U.S. A national effort to help forests help us meet our national #climate and #conservation goals.

Oxygen Production: Trees produce oxygen via photosynthesis ?? Temperature Regulation: Trees provide shade and cool the air ?? Biodiversity Support: Trees offer habitats for wildlife ?? Soil Conservation: Tree roots stabilize and enrich soil ?? Air Quality: Trees filter air pollutants It’s that simple. ???? Credit: Vojtech Vosecky
