Duke ECE is home to the pioneers of technologies once relegated to science fiction. But our research doesn’t just sound cool, it’s transforming our understanding of what’s possible to create a better tomorrow. The mission of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is to facilitate the development of well rounded, educated, productive, and ethical individuals who are well versed in technology and in social, political, and environmental issues. Our goals are to develop within each student a robust repertoire of professional skills, to provide each with avenues for exploring diverse interests, and to launch each successfully into one of a variety of careers offering lifelong learning, service, and leadership within their own local, national and global communities.

I was recently interviewed by The New York Times to share my thoughts on the recent success of DeepSeek and its connection to AI education in China, particularly in comparison to the U.S. I made my point very clear: “There are many young, energetic, and talented researchers and engineers inside China. I don’t think there’s a big gap in terms of education between China and the U.S. in that perspective, especially in A.I.” If we do not continue investing in AI education in the U.S.—and at an even higher level—we risk falling behind. From this perspective, cutting the budgets of the National Science Foundation (NSF) and other funding agencies is both short-sighted and irresponsible. ECE was pleased to host 50 Duke School 4th graders in the labs recently. Students got to see a robot in action, visit the Shared Materials Instrumentation Facility (SMiF), visit the CoLab, and learn how to program a robot to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich (which Adam Davidson then got to eat). Special thanks to Anya Dias-Hawkins for leading the tour and Holly Leddy, who helped the students gown up for SMiF.

Today, a friend shared a link with me to the Most Influential NeurIPS Papers summarized by Paper Digest: https://lnkd.in/eimhWXFB The ranking is based on citation counts. Our paper, "Learning Structured Sparsity in Deep Neural Networks," was ranked No. 10 (though I believe it is now at No. 9) among papers from NeurIPS 2016. This work (https://lnkd.in/eccRrG4S) was the first to demonstrate that deep neural networks need to be pruned structurally to achieve actual speedup on computing hardware. This approach later became a standard practice in neural network pruning in industry. The paper has been cited over 3,000 times since it was published.
