Over a decade ago, Duke ECE faculty Yiran Chen tackled a challenge that seemed ahead of its time: training neural networks directly on hardware. His paper published in 2014 laid the groundwork for modern machine learning, enabling AI to process data faster and more efficiently. Backed by National Science Foundation (NSF) funding, Duke ECE faculty Emily Edwards is collaborating with the University of Chicago to create interactive games to make the weird world of quantum science accessible to young learners. ?? Quander is made up of five mini games, such as Qupcakery, where you fulfill orders by converting cupcake flavors on a conveyor belt, teaching the concept of superposition, the ability of a quantum system to exist in multiple states simultaneously until measured. "With quantum, we try to meet students where they’re at," Edwards said. Duke ECE faculty Huanqian Loh has been named a 2025 Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Research Fellow in Physics—one of the most prestigious honors for early-career scientists in the U.S. and Canada. The two-year fellowship recognizes researchers who demonstrate the creativity and drive to become the next generation of leaders in their fields and includes a $75,000 award. Loh joined Duke University in 2024 with broad experience in quantum computing technologies.
