We’re excited about a pilot program we have launched with Mars and Lumen Field to test a more sustainable packaging for the Skittles brand. ? The new packages have been designed and certified for industrial composting. Mars has invested years of iterative research, testing and development into creating a prototype that will keep Skittles fresh and then easily compost after they’ve been enjoyed. ? On October 27, 2024, Mars distributed more than 2,000 packages of Skittles at a tailgate at Seattle’s Lumen Field. Thousands of football fans were able to enjoy their Skittles, and then the packages were collected by DTG’s Sustainability Ambassadors. ? The Skittles packages were then shipped to our Kingston facility, where they were introduced into an Aerated Static Pile (ASP) composting process. First, they were subjected to a PFRP process, which involves exposing them to heat to kill any human pathogens. Once the process is complete, they will spend the next 90 days gradually decomposing. DTG will report back to Mars at 45-, 60- and 90-day intervals to ensure the material composts as expected. At the end of the process, the compost will be used to enrich gardens across the greater Puget Sound.? ? We’re proud to be part of this innovative project that will help us learn more about consumer behavior and their reception to more compostable packaging options.
