Among the items salvaged at #Kurakhove power plant, Ukraine, was a crumbling photo album. Warped and stained with age it contains sepia images of the plant under construction in the 1930s, with steam-powered excavators and horse-drawn carts, reports the The Wall Street Journal. The plant came online on 6th July 1941 and survived attacks during World War II to operate for another 82 years. Today, it lies empty. Responding to constant shelling and approaching russian forces, everything is gone but the boilers and other parts are too unwieldy to transport. The rest has been repurposed to power the restoration of other power plants hit by russian missile attack. ? Important piece in SEMAFOR on the value of backing clean energy in Ukraine: ? Geoffrey Pyatt, US assistant secretary of state for energy resources: supporting Ukraine’s clean energy transition should be a key element of US strategy, backing for Ukraine’s renewable and nuclear energy projects will reduce reliance on russian fossil fuels and support US economic interests. ?Ukraine is facing severe energy infrastructure damage from Russian attacks, making its energy transition even more challenging, while progress toward net-zero goals has been slowed by the war. ?DTEK CSO Jeff Oatham: access to finance remains the biggest obstacle to rebuilding a greener energy system. Imagine where Ukraine could be without russia’s full-scale invasion. 1,000 days of effort placed not in rebuilding after attacks, but in progress and prosperity. We see huge potential in Ukraine’s energy system. Unleashed, the country’s wind and solar farms alone could power all of Europe seven times over, producing an estimated 18,460 TWh. #StandWithUkraine #FightForLight

This is Roman Dudarev, a mining foreman who worked for 18 years at DTEK Energy. In response to russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Roman answered his country’s call and joined a motorised infantry battalion. He rose to become commander of a machine gun squad and took part in some of the most intense combat on the eastern front. Known by his call-sign 'Ramses', Junior Sergeant Dudarev was awarded Ukraine’s Cross of the Brave badge for his exceptional bravery. On March 28, 2024, he was killed in a battle near the village of Klishchiyivka in Donetsk region. As Ukraine marks 1,000 days since russia's full-scale invasion on 24th February 2022, DTEK honours Roman and every one of the 324 DTEK employees who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Maxim Timchenko, DTEK CEO, stated: "The loss of every DTEK employee is a tragedy for our company and country. I offer my heartfelt gratitude to colleagues, and their families, who have sacrificed everything for our freedom.?We honour their memory in our work to build a sustainable, resilient and free Ukraine." #FightForLight
