After working and being in a community with over 500 DEI practitioners and through my own experiences this past year, I’m seeing that the lifecycle that I created back in 2021 and updated last year has remained constant. I know everyone may not have these exact experiences, and they do not always happen in the same order. But one thing has remained consistent. DEI work is heavy, and working in this space while having to navigate everything going on in the world is leading to burnout and compassion fatigue and becoming even harder. The folks in DEI Blueprint? who I’ve been working personally are pushing forward with DEI and navigating all of the pushback, which has kept me encouraged and hopeful. Similar to the DEI Adoption cycle I shared a few days ago, this process model I created in 2022 shows the progress of folks committing to DEI (I've updated the model to change the "buy-in" phase to "commitment)." Keep in mind that DEI as a “role” in a company is still fairly new. And for that reason, folks will oscillate back and forth between the first three phases. In the Baseline phase, just because someone knows what diversity, inclusion, and belonging mean doesn’t mean they understand how power and psychological safety interplay with those concepts. As we learn more about topics related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, we have to be sure to spread the knowledge, and folks have to educate themselves continuously. As societal and political shifts happen, folks who don’t have a direct tie to will move in and out of the questioning and interest phases. Capitalism is also a contributing factor because folks want to maintain financial stability so they may comply to keep their jobs, and leaders will do what they think is prioritizing their bottom line. I’d also like to add a reminder that “buy-in” isn’t only tied to DEI initiatives and a budget line. It’s about shifting the way the organization operates to ensure that no matter who is a part of the leadership team, all employees will have equitable access to the resources, compensation, and support they need and that there will be a representation of diverse groups of people with the power to make and implement decisions. ???? **Whispers: Divesting from DEI hurts your profits and bottom line in the long run. For those of you who are new to my page and content, or for folks I haven’t interacted with recently, hello ????. Here are a few things about me and a major update I recently shared with my email list. 1. I am autistic. The first time I shared this publicly was at the very end of 2022 on TikTok and April 2023 on LinkedIn. I was very nervous about it and afraid of what people would think, so it was a very choppy and not straightforward message. I plan to do an updated message since it’s been one full year of being late-diagnosed. 2. I took a 6-month sabbatical last year and have been contemplating extending it for the rest of this year. 3. In 2021, I built out phase 1 of an app for folks working in the DEI and HR space to level up their skills and build community. We launched our program DEI Blueprint?, which teaches folks the framework I created for developing 3-year DEI strategies. In 2022, we launched the final phase of the app DEI Offload? to house over 500 DEI & HR professionals across the world along with our program. I recently shared with my email list that we’ve updated our app to consolidate both DEI Offload? and DEI Blueprint? so that it is one streamlined and cohesive app. We’ve also significantly adjusted our prices to be more accessible for folks and account for the massive layoffs and other changes we’re seeing to the DEI field. ??If you’d like to learn more about our changes and join us, check out dsrdconsulting. com/dei-blueprint. The resistance and pushback we're witnessing against DEI are a good thing. Follow me for a second. The pushback we're seeing is a sign of progress. They show us?that our efforts to change things are working. Because if they weren't, there wouldn't be any pushback. This cycle we see in DEI reminds me of the book Crossing the Chasm. In it, the author talks about how new ideas are adopted. In short, there's this big gap between early adopters and the mainstream crowd. Right now, DEI is at that gap. Here are the phases I've described in the graphic below. ???Early Market: The folks who get it without much convincing. Typically, those who are a part of marginalized groups. ???The Chasm: The gap we're trying to bridge. Allies and folks who care about equity either because a family member might need support, or they recently became a part of a marginalized group, or they genuinely care. ???The Bowling Alley: Targeting those niche groups and making small wins. Companies who have bought into the business case of DEI. ???The Tornado: Where things really pick up and everyone starts to catch on. Other larger companies start to catch on, and/or a social event happens to cause sudden interest. ???Main Street: DEI is a part of how things are done. Over the last few centuries, we've moved between the first few phases, and that's because DEI isn't new. It's been a fight for centuries. But every bit of pushback is like a step forward. Crossing this chasm will take all of us. Black folks and everyone from marginalized communities shouldn't have to do the heavy lifting alone. Honestly, I think now is the time for Black folks to take a rest and have others step up to the plate. This Black History Month, let's remember where DEI started – with Black people fighting for basic rights and equitable access to resources. And let's also level set our expectations from our Black DEI leaders. I'm thinking of breaking this cycle down more in a webinar session. Would you be interested?
