Three years ago, Mike Powers sat in a presentation at work, listening to a DSABC representative talk about mentoring. Something about it stuck with him—he knew he wanted to help. Now, as a mentor, Mike’s favorite part isn’t about structured activities or big lessons. It’s the simple act of showing up. “I always take every effort to be there every week,” he says, even if it means shifting his schedule. When John first met his mentor Scott back in elementary school, he had no idea how much that relationship would shape his future. Over the years, Scott became more than just a mentor—he became a friend, a listener, and someone John could count on. Whether they were playing the military board game Scott created or just talking about life, their time together helped John see new possibilities. “Scott helped me figure out who I am and what I want to be,” John says. Now, as an 11th grader at Abbott Tech, he’s thinking about his next steps—college for electrical engineering or working in construction with his dad.
