Yesterday, DHS had the honor of welcoming Mayor Alves during FLEX, where he shared his journey in leadership, public service, and the importance of community involvement. Students had the opportunity to hear firsthand about the challenges and rewards of making a difference, ask questions, and gain valuable insights into shaping their own futures. Thank you, Mayor Alves, for taking the time to inspire and engage with our students—we appreciate your leadership and dedication to the Danbury community! #DHSFLEX #FutureLeaders #LeadershipInAction #CommunityMatters

关于我们
Danbury Student and Business Connection (DSABC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that fosters collaboration among Danbury Public Schools, local businesses and the community to promote lifelong learning and the successful transition of youth into society and the workforce. The mission of DSABC is to help Danbury Public School students achieve personal and academic success through school based mentoring and scholarship programs. The One-on-One Mentoring Program provides positive adult role models to at-risk students, grades K - 12, in thirteen elementary schools, three middle schools and three high schools. The One-on-One Mentoring Program matches a supportive and caring adult who assists students to succeed in school by developing a one-on-one relationship. Mentors serve as a positive adult role model providing moral support and encouragement. Mentors typically spend one hour a week with their mentee. The objective of the program is to improve academic performance, attendance, behavior, attitude toward school, and most importantly, self-esteem and motivation. The long-term goal is dropout prevention. The Workplace Learning E-Mentoring Program matches an industry mentor with students enrolled in the Early College Opportunity Program (DECO) at Danbury High School. DECO is designed to provide participating students with opportunities to prepare for postsecondary education and career readiness. Students enrolled in the program can earn college credits, and students who graduate from DECO will not only earn a high school diploma but an associate degree from Naugatuck Valley Community College. Mentors provide guidance and advice on developing workplace skills and work together on assigned activities via an online platform and several face to face meetings throughout the year. The long-term goal is for students to obtain internships and enter into the workforce with the necessary skills for success.

Three years ago, Mike Powers sat in a presentation at work, listening to a DSABC representative talk about mentoring. Something about it stuck with him—he knew he wanted to help. Now, as a mentor, Mike’s favorite part isn’t about structured activities or big lessons. It’s the simple act of showing up. “I always take every effort to be there every week,” he says, even if it means shifting his schedule. Because for his mentee, that consistency—a friendly face, a break in the day—makes all the difference. Thinking about becoming a mentor? Take Mike’s advice: Just be there. That’s what matters most. #MentorMonday #DSABC #BeTheDifference

When John first met his mentor Scott back in elementary school, he had no idea how much that relationship would shape his future. Over the years, Scott became more than just a mentor—he became a friend, a listener, and someone John could count on. Whether they were playing the military board game Scott created or just talking about life, their time together helped John see new possibilities. “Scott helped me figure out who I am and what I want to be,” John says. Now, as an 11th grader at Abbott Tech, he’s thinking about his next steps—college for electrical engineering or working in construction with his dad. His advice to students wondering if they should get a mentor? “Do it! A mentor helps in ways you don’t expect.” ?? Ready to find your mentor?
