Navigating Construction Cost Uncertainty Tariffs and supply chain disruptions have made construction costs unpredictable, but proactive strategies can help keep projects on track. Here’s some tools to pivot and potentially manage cost volatility while maintaining trust between architects, clients and contractors. 1. Material Escalation Clauses – Contracts that allow price adjustments if key material costs spike beyond a set threshold. This protects both contractors and owners from financial strain and ensures fair pricing based on market conditions or hold an escalation contingency that can be credited as needed. 2. Strategic Procurement – Early purchasing and alternative sourcing can mitigate price surges. Diversifying suppliers and securing materials in advance helps control costs and avoid supply chain delays. 3. Flexible Design – Adjusting material choices or simplifying certain design elements can maintain quality while staying within budget. Exploring alternative materials can often achieve the same performance at a lower cost. 4. Transparent Communication – Keeping all stakeholders informed about market shifts, pricing changes, and supply chain risks fosters trust and allows for real-time adjustments that keep projects moving forward. Construction costs may be unpredictable, but with the right planning and collaboration, we can manage these challenges effectively. If you’ve had to navigate material cost swings, what strategies have worked for you? Let’s discuss how we can keep building smart despite market uncertainties.

Drury Architects is pleased to announce the completion of the Ferrarini Café Outdoor Dining Patio, one of the first permanent installations developed under the City of Beverly Hills Al Fresco Outdoor Dining Program. This 60-foot-long patio was designed to enhance the streetscape and urban core of Beverly Hills, offering a vibrant and welcoming space for outdoor dining. The project was a collaboration between Ferrarini Café, Triple Five Pacific Fastwell General Contractors, and Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects, designer of the prefabricated patio system, with Drury Architects serving as the Architect of Record. The innovative team at the City of Beverly Hills played a key role in supporting the permitting and approvals process, ensuring the project aligned with the program’s streamlined guidelines and vision for public-private partnerships. The Ferrarini Café patio represents a meaningful improvement to the heart of the city’s retail and commercial district. 2025 begins with a sense of optimism and purpose at Drury Architects. This year brings a range of exciting projects—a duplex ramping up, a carefully crafted Echo Park home addition, funeral home revitalizations, casino and hospitality transformations, and the advancement of affordable housing initiatives. Each reflects the importance of thoughtful, cost-conscious design that meets today’s challenges without compromising vision. Collaboration remains at the heart of every endeavor. Success and momentum are shared with partners, consultants, and clients who trust in the value of creating spaces that inspire and perform. What’s trending for 2025? Brick-and-mortar businesses are doubling down on renovations, cost-conscious expansions, and strategic new builds. The current economic climate and higher interest rates encourage careful spending but haven’t slowed construction. Instead, there’s a focus on smarter, more intentional investment in the built environment—a trend that signals resilience and opportunity in the year ahead.

What if city scooters charged themselves? Solar-powered kiosks could revolutionize scooter programs by reducing the need for collection and charging. Lower operational costs mean cheaper rides for users, while hybrid grid/solar energy makes the system more sustainable. Public-private partnerships can fund these kiosks, expanding affordable transit in downtown areas and boosting local businesses. A cleaner, more connected city is possible—what’s your take? Let’s rethink urban mobility. #SolarScooters #SustainableTransit #Micromobility

What if Los Angeles Reimagined Green Spaces in Urban Streets? What if we transformed LA’s sidewalks and medians into a connected network of green spaces that not only beautify but redefine our urban experience? Could these small changes spark a larger shift in how we design for sustainability and livability in our cities? Imagine modular planting units filled with native, drought-resistant greenery, creating lush, low-maintenance oases in even the narrowest medians. Picture low-profile bioswales collecting rainwater, naturally filtering out pollutants and reframing how we manage stormwater in our neighborhoods. What impact would vertical green barriers between sidewalks and streets have—not just in beautifying but in improving air quality and creating cooler, healthier spaces for pedestrians? If micro-solutions like solar-powered drip irrigation systems became the norm, could they keep vegetation healthy while drastically reducing resource use? Envision medians seeded with wildflowers and native grasses, reintroducing biodiversity and supporting local ecology—all while lowering maintenance costs. Imagine transforming concrete spaces into recycled permeable surfaces, redefining how we experience water and heat in our urban landscape. What if we activated street life through pop-up parklets and micro-parks just off sidewalks, integrating green spaces into daily life rather than isolating them as destinations? Would temporary pavilions and community gathering spots reshape our concept of public space, knitting neighborhoods together? What would a city look like if we embraced green, sustainable, and people-centered design in every available space? #FutureOfCities #SustainableDesign #UrbanEcology #GreenLA

Working on projects in the California desert is a unique and inspiring experience. The vast, open landscape allows for design that seamlessly blends indoor and outdoor living. This new project uses natural materials and earthy tones to harmonize with its surroundings, offering both shelter and a strong connection to the environment. Desert architecture is all about embracing the elements—using deep overhangs for shade, natural ventilation, and sustainable design solutions to handle the heat during the day and cool nights. The stark beauty of the desert calls for intimate spaces like shaded patios and manageable water features that provide coolness and tranquility. Each project becomes a celebration of how design can enhance the natural landscape. #newproject #desertarchitecture #druryarchitects Read more at: https://lnkd.in/e83mPEwb
