Akash P. was nice enough to let me interview him twice and I walked away deeply impressed with his knowledge of digital pathology, data science, and, well, science. For background, he sent me multiple research papers that showed a diverse interest in areas ranging from computational biology and AI-driven diagnostics to cognitive psychology and medical imaging. A couple of quotes stood out to me. One was "A single slide image can equal 'two or three tennis courts' in size." And sometimes pathology is a bit like finding a needle in the proverbial haystack.

Among R&D-heavy companies, Bristol Myers Squibb had strong performance Sanofi, Pfizer and Lilly fared less well.

Amgen (~18%) For Amgen, the acquisition of Horizon Therapeutics contributed $1.2 billion in sales from rare disease products, including TEPEZZA (teprotumumab-trbw), KRYSTEXXA (pegloticase), UPLIZNA (inebilizumab-cdon), and TAVNEOS (avacopan). For AstraZeneca, there were several growth drivers. Two examples include: Enhertu: Combined sales, recorded by Daiichi Sankyo and AstraZeneca, amounted to $2,729 million in the first nine months of 2024, up from $1,844 million in the same period of 2023. 3-year study: Tirzepatide prevents diabetes in almost 99% of prediabetic adults Although Lilly has shared the topline results of the SURMOUNT-1 trial, now, the full data from the three-year study have been published in the?New England Journal of Medicine. The biggest conclusion was that 98.7% (752 of 762) of participants who received tirzepatide remained diabetes-free over the three years, translating to a 94% reduction in risk of progression to type 2 diabetes compared to placebo. By comparison, 86.7% of those in the placebo group remained diabetes-free over the?176-week?study. The therapy also supported sustained weight loss of up to 22.9% over the study period.

While the map here shows pharma patent activity (YTD), the analysis (shared in the comments) considers NIH funding for FY2025 (also YTD, of course), lab space costs, and other metrics. Focusing on core pharma patents, Novartis so far leads rivals in international patents granted. Roche was next. Number 3 was China Pharmaceutical University, a public university located in Nanjing.
