Storm work update from Team Drost 🍃 If you ever thought, "I wonder how many calls the team at Drost has gotten for all this storm work..." The answer is around 500. And if you ever thought, "I wonder how many sites those arborists at Drost can visit in a day..." The answer is somewhere between 5-10. So if you read that and thought, "Wow, I wonder how long they'll be working on storm cleanup calls..." The answer is unknown, but we're in this for the long haul with you. Please rest assured that if you have called, we have your information and will get back in touch with you as quickly as we can. Currently, we are prioritizing those who have trees on structures or blocking entrances or exits, and our team is working long and hard to help as many people as we can as quickly as we can. We know wait times for reputable local companies are long, but the experience, expertise, and peace of mind they offer are worth the wait. We (and the other reputable local companies) appreciate your patience and understanding as we all continue the long, hard work of cleaning up.

  • Repeat after me: Summer is coming, summer is coming, summer is coming... The landscapes are certainly going to be different this summer, and there's still plenty of cleanup work to be done in many places. But soon we'll be enjoying consistent sunny days and warmer weather, and even though it will be different, it will still be Northern Michigan, and it will still be home. 💚

  • Thinking about trees... 😟 The damage from the ice storm has fundamentally changed countless yards across Northern Michigan. And while some people might say, "They're just trees," we know that a tree is never a "just." Trees are the backbones of the landscape, often the first thing planted or an existing element that a garden is built around. They offer shade from the summer sun, create a welcoming space for garden visitors, and add a character and life that can't be replicated by anything else. And for many people, trees are connected to memories--who we climbed that one with, the food we shared having a picnic under that one, or the person we planted that one for. We've lived with these trees for years--decades--sometimes even generations. There's the physical damage, but this kind of destruction has a real emotional impact, too, because they're not "just" trees. So today, as cleanup efforts continue, we're holding space for the emotional impact of this event and reassuring you that it's okay, and normal, to feel upset about the damage that's been done to the trees, because they were never "just" trees to begin with.

  • It's a new week, and cleanup efforts continue across Northern Michigan. Our team is still addressing emergency situations, working long and hard to help as many people as we can as quickly as we are able. We are incredibly appreciative of the patience and understanding people have extended when calling us--we all know we're in this for the long haul, and we continue to do our best to navigate the intensity of the situation. As a reminder, tree work is dangerous work in any circumstances. Our team has years of training and experience, as well as the best PPE, to help them minimize risks and work as safely as possible. Even "smaller" jobs carry risks and can cause serious harm if not done properly. Please take the appropriate steps to keep yourself and your family safe. • 3D Design -> Livable space The landscape design process is varied and unique to each project. Not every design needs a 3D model, but in some cases it's beneficial to get a clearer sense of what the end result will look like. This landscape was one such case. With lots packed into a small space, it was helpful to see a 3D approximation of what the flat design was communicating. The finished landscape may not look exactly like its 3D counterpart, but that's a good thing--because a livable space is always better.

  • Mentally, I'm here. 🌞 The long and winding road...to the patio. Ah, soon, soon it will be patio season, and who isn't excited for that? In the first photo, a patio makes use of a densely shaded spot in the landscape, shining a spotlight on an area that might otherwise be overlooked. In the second and third photos, a lakeside patio is ready for sun-soaked days and starry nights. Both of these patios feature fire pits, simple additions that instantly elevate the space and create more opportunities for fun memories.
