May the best product win. But first, we need lobbyists! The latest generation of defense tech startups share a common goal: leveling the playing field with incumbents. They should start an industry group to advocate for better regulations to make it easier to buy cheaper, smarter systems that aren't designed for sustainment. New companies shouldn't win because they're new. Old companies shouldn't win because they're old. Unlike startups, these old companies have the budget to lobby. They can hire people to wander around the Pentagon. They have build up the sides of the walled garden that is the Defense Industrial Base. One terrible example of this is attritable, autonomous systems. The cheap drones that require no training, yet can only be effectively countered by systems that cost 100X more. We're on the wrong side of this equation. Who is lobbying for cheap, smart systems? Startups can't afford to do it. And the incumbents aren't going to break their own business model. They make money sustaining exquisite platforms. I hope the best in the field pool their resources. Startups such as Saronic Technologies, Swarmbotics AI, Drooid, Vantage Robotics, and Fortem Technologies should work together. Some of the bigs (SpaceX, Anduril Industries) can help.
