Despite the pro-fossil fuel political push we find ourselves in, the future of fashion is plastic free. The genie cannot be put back in the bottle. There are increasing scientific studies making the headlines about how our clothing is polluting both our environment and our bodies. (https://lnkd.in/gFWunZ2p) Those who enjoy the outdoors have increasing concern that the clothing they wear to enjoy the outdoors is incompatible with their health and the natural spaces they seek to enjoy and/or protect. It doesn't have to be that way. I launched Driftless Goods, a plastic-free outdoor apparel brand via pre-sale in 2024 and my first season proved that the consumer appetite is there. I am looking for values aligned partners to help me sustainably grow this business. If you would like to chat, see my deck, have questions please be in touch.

The future of fashion must be bio-based. We cannot continue to pollute our oceans and organs for the sake of more profits for oil companies. Thank you to Changing Markets Foundation for continuing to illuminate the connection between fashion and the fossil fuel industry.
?? NEW REPORT: Today, a groundbreaking report from the Changing Markets Foundation exposes how fashion brands are fueling microplastic pollution while using delay and distraction tactics to avoid real change. We surveyed 50 major fashion brands about their use of synthetic fibres and their policies and strategies for addressing microplastic pollution. Published at the end of London Fashion Week, Fashion's Plastic Paralysis tells the less-than-glamorous truth behind the industry's favourite fibres. ?? Around half of the companies (11/23) that responded have increased their use of synthetics since 2022, including four brands that said they would reduce this ??? SHEIN & Zara are the biggest users of synthetics, but luxury retailers like Kering & LVMH score poorly for their synthetic usage or lack of microplastic policies too ?? This dependency is fuelling the microplastic crisis, which threatens human and planetary health, while the fashion industry relentlessly prioritises profits over immediate action. Helpful data and another reason why we developed a 100% merino wool fleece.
WOOL BIODEGRADES IN MARINE ENVIRONMENTS - STUDY: Recent research funded by Australian Wool Innovation has again confirmed the superior biodegradability of #wool in marine environments compared to synthetic fibres. Conducted by AgResearch, the study revealed that both untreated and machine-washable wool degrade significantly faster than synthetics like polyester and nylon. Notably, no microplastic pollution was detected from the Hercosett resin used in machine-washable wool. As the #textile industry faces increased scrutiny over environmental impacts, the findings strengthen the case for natural fibres like wool. Wool's ability to break down without contributing to microplastic pollution positions it as a solution in reducing textile waste in oceans. AWI continues to advocate for the inclusion of microplastic emissions in the European Union’s Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) framework. #Sustainability #MarinePollution #NaturalFibres #TextileIndustry Read the full open access article here: https://lnkd.in/eZQPGnXi

I made the Vogue Business VB100 2024 Innovators ?? Driftless Goods is an outdoor apparel brand for people who like nice things and prefer not to wrap themselves in plastic. I truly believe the future of fashion is rooted in goods designed for longevity that can safely return to earth as nutrients, on demand/small batch production and regional supply chains. It makes financial sense and given the challenges the apparel industry faces such as, microplastic pollution in our organs and oceans, growing emissions contributing to climate change and a waste crisis - designing to reduce or eliminate those impacts seems pretty important. You can read more about all the innovators and our work at https://lnkd.in/gprCSZWv hashtag #VB100 #regenerativefashion #slowfashion #circularfashion #sustainablefashion

Hello Friends, It's been a minute since I have posted - not going to lie, July was quite a stressful month at Driftless. We are finally in full swing garment production in NYC - thanks to my very supportive and flexible factory in NYC's garment district and our regenerative merino wool fiber partner Shaniko Wool Company, LLC. Mid-September pre-orders ship and ltd quantities of instock, plastic-free fleece outerwear and some new things land in the shop (www.driftlessgoods.com)! Some sizes have already sold out, so if you have your eye on something, now is that time. The pre-production samples look really beautiful! #slowfashion #plasticfree #circularfashion #regenerativefibers #regenerativewool #organiccotton #microplastics

Grateful to Jane Hanson for her thoughtfully written article in Forbes, we were featured in this past weekend. As we see more and more studies published on the risk of microplastic pollution in our organs and oceans, wrapping yourself in synthetics made from plastic doesn't seem so luxurious anymore. Once your feel the beautiful hand of our wool fleece collection made from regenerative merino wool, you'll understand. https://lnkd.in/gGncT8rQ

I’m currently fundraising to build a plastic-free and thus microplastic-free outdoor apparel brand. Will be interesting to see if these recent studies help me raise.
MICROPLASTICS - INCLUDING PET FOR TEXTILES - DISCOVERED IN HUMAN PENISES FOR FIRST TIME: #Microplastics have been found in human penises - prompting concerns about their potential link to erectile dysfunction. Almost half the microplastics found were polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The majority of the world’s PET production is for synthetic #textile fibres with bottle production accounting for around a third of global demand. This discovery follows the recent detection of microplastics in testes and semen. With male fertility declining in recent decades, the study team stressed the urgency of more research into the potential reproductive harm caused by microplastics. Researchers suggest the penis might be especially susceptible to microplastic contamination due to increased blood flow during erections. People are exposed to microplastics through eating, drinking, and breathing, with these particles also detected in the bloodstream. The study analysed tissue samples from five men undergoing surgery for erectile dysfunction. Microplastics were found in four of the cases, predominantly PET and polypropylene.
