“If we did know why, we’d be able to prevent it.” These were the words of #Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes, spoken in response to a journalist’s question about the shooter’s motivations following the Abundant Life Christian School shooting. This statement highlights an intersection between behavioral science and threat prevention: If we have an understanding of the “why” among thousands of past school shooters, how are we not able to prevent them? The prediction and control of behavior is a central tenet of behavioral science: “If you pet a dog, how will it respond?” “Can we accurately predict how a dog will respond to ‘a pet’ from our data?” Traditionally, a three-term approach is used to analyze a subject’s behavior. This approach considers the stimulus that prompts the behavior, the behavior itself, and the consequence of the behavior. However, many behaviorists argue that this approach isn’t enough—prediction and control require a thorough consideration of the behavior’s history. Much like with threat assessments, understanding the full context and history behind behavior is key to making proactive interventions. For example, a school threat isn’t just about a recent argument or social media post—it’s about patterns, prior behaviors, and long-term environmental influences that shape a person’s actions. Understanding the “why” behind violent threats requires careful and deliberate record-keeping—it’s not just about making quick judgments in the moment. Schools need to evaluate their threat assessment policies and procedures to ensure they account for both immediate and long-term behavioral patterns!

I’ve been noticing a commonality in my meetings lately with Higher Ed institutions… They have the need for a Behavioral Threat Assessment program (some expressed having multiple threats come in weekly), their staff is equipped with the expertise and knowledge to do threat assessments.. but many do not have a standardized up-to-date program in place that is implemented. Compared to K-12 public schools one could say nationally higher-ed is behind the curve when it comes to establishing a proper threat assessment team and program. I could assume it is directly linked to the lack of state/legislative requirements to do so? Possibly the security industry will assist this moving forward and we will see a rise in the establishment of these programs in Higher-Ed institutions as technology advances? If you work in educational safety and security, I would love to hear your thoughts. Some interesting stats are attached. For more resources… https://lnkd.in/g_XCTWtX

?? FRIDAY POLL ?? Did you know there is a bipartisan effort to end hazing in our nations college campuses? The Stop Campus Hazing Act (SCHA) is a bipartisan federal law designed to combat hazing and enhance student safety in higher education institutions. Effective January 1, 2025, the SCHA mandates that colleges and universities participating in Title IV programs under the Higher Education Act of 1965 must: ? Collect and report hazing incidents ? Publicly disclose hazing incidents and provide transparency ? Implement programs aimed at preventing hazing and raising awareness This is a step forward in making campuses safer and more accountable! Speaking of—did your college have a well-known hazing incident while you were there?

Camera companies for too long have repackaged the same solution year over year… primarily being a tool used after an incident, not during one. That is why Drift Net built our own holistic hardware and software solution - KnowWhere. Leveraging Edge AI with dual GPU’s onboard each device for real time video processing, being able to detect things like occupancy per area, weapons, shots fired, and suspicious bags to name a few. Giving security personnel real time and accurate details on what is going on and where people are allowing for shortened response times. Each camera (thermal and HD) has its own motor and gearing mechanism allowing for pan and tilt functions. Equally as important as detecting a threat is helping the location respond. That is why we also built features like two way communication on each device for mass notification as well as more granular communication when desired. The LED side and front panel turn red when the location needs to be placed into lockdown and green when it is all clear, it also changes color to guide you to your nearest exit. Check out our website (www.driftnet.com) to see all the features. This is by far the most comprehensive and thought out camera and response system on the market. This device is far more than an AI overlay (though we have one of those as well called Detect) this is a game changer. Oh and it’s manufactured right here in Chicago- name another early stage startup doing that?

Content Warning: images relating to violence and suicide The tragic events at Antioch High School in #Tennessee further amplify the importance of threat reporting and schools utilizing #threatassessment to the fullest extent. The shooter in this case left a collection of warning signs, leakage, and an online footprint detailing his obsession with school shooters. While it's unclear when the entirety of the shooter's leakage was published, it's certainly clear that he was immersed in the school shooter subculture. In Chapter 5 of "Warning Signs: Identifying School Shooters Before They Strike," "Getting Psyched: Immersion in a World of Violence," Peter Langman, Ph.D. notes the psychological preparation included in attack-related behaviors: ?? Researching school shooters and other mass attackers ?? Finding or imitating role models ?? Adopting or creating an ideology that supports violence ?? Normalizing or justifying killing people Shooter was clearly conscious of the memes and insider language used in school shooter subculture spaces, as evidenced by images of him wearing clothing associated with inceldom and references to previous shooters found in the manifesto published before the shooting. A collection of images shows Shooter imitating infamous selfies, poses, and hand gestures of past shooters, including Adam Lanza, Seung-Hui Cho, Patrick Crusius, and others. (see image) Shooter communicated a violent, racist ideology similar to that of past white nationalist shooters, including the justification of killing people. I hope we don’t find in the coming weeks that these warning signs were ignored or otherwise dismissed.
