New on-demand course! We are now offering a recording of our BHE Speaker Series training, “The Courage to Talk: Overcoming Discomfort in Discussions on Racism,” with Esther Hio-Tong Castillo, PhD, and Karin Gladney, PhD, CAADC, as an on-demand course. Participants can earn 2 CE hours at any time. Systemic racism is deeply embedded in our institutions and communities, presenting significant challenges that require us to engage in difficult but necessary conversations about race. As James Baldwin famously stated, "Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced." This moderated conversation aims to empower participants to confront their discomfort and engage in meaningful discussions on racism, fostering greater inclusion within our interpersonal relationships, workplaces and communities. In this session, we will delve into the importance of discussing race and racism, providing strategies to overcome the emotional and psychological barriers that often hinder these conversations. The session will also explore the mindsets that inhibit authentic cross-racial connections and offer practical approaches to fostering more meaningful dialogues. Join Karin Gladney, PhD, CAADC, for “Prolonged Grief Disorder: Considerations for Assessment, Diagnosis and Treatment.” 11/20/24 9 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. ET 3 CE Hours Live Webinar Grief is a complex and universal human experience, but for some, it can develop into a debilitating and prolonged condition known as prolonged grief disorder (PGD). An estimated 7-10% of bereaved adults and approximately 5-10% of children and adolescents will experience persistent symptoms of prolonged grief disorder, which extend beyond what is considered the normal course of mourning. The addition of PGD to the Trauma and Stressor-Related Disorders chapter of the DSM-5-TR has sparked controversy and debate about the pathologizing of grief. This course will provide practical skills in assessing and managing PGD, including evidence-based assessment tools and treatment approaches designed for working with those struggling with severe and prolonged grief reactions. Join Lindsay Martin, PhD, LPC, NCC, CIMHP, for “Teens and Trauma: Navigating Challenges.” 11/19/24 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. ET 5 CE Hours Live Webinar Being a teenager is challenging enough, but what happens when trauma enters the picture? Rapid developmental changes combined with trauma-related psychological and behavioral issues become an added difficulty for adolescents and their support networks. The struggle to make sense of it all may trigger substance use, self-injury and sensation-seeking behaviors as efforts to cope. These factors also strain relationships, lead to inaccurate diagnoses and result in misguided interventions. This training will discuss trauma-related symptoms and developmental influences, as well as current evidence-based approaches to treatment and strategies for partnering with caregivers.
