For the week ending 22 November, Drewry Equity indices exhibited a mixed performance (vs. S&P 500 up 1.7% and Rusell 2000 up 4.5%). The Drewry LNG Index rose 2.7% as both Golar LNG and Flex LNG rose 8.6% and 4.1%. Similarly, Drewry LPG and Port Indices rose 0.8% and 0.6% respectively. Conversely, Dry Bulk Index declined 5.4% due to a fall in the TCE rates. Meanwhile, Product and Crude tanker continue their downtrend with declines of 1.5% and 1.2%. The US President-elect, in a bold statement last night, announced plans to impose a 25% tariff on all imports from Canada and Mexico starting 20 January 2025. This significant move could impact the dry bulk trade, with two potential outcomes: Trade between US and Canada as well as US and Mexico might continue as usual, absorbing the added tariff cost. Alternatively, the steep tariff could push some US importers to pivot away from Canadian and Mexican suppliers. Canada’s top dry bulk export commodity (fertiliser) to the US, might be substituted with imports from Russia or Israel, stretching sailing distances and boosting shipping demand. Similarly, steel trade could shift away from Canada and Mexico to suppliers in Brazil or even farther, such as South Korea and Japan, increasing shipping activity on Panamax and Supramax vessels. It was inspiring to see so many industry colleagues turn up for the event despite the challenging weather, and the sessions were nothing short of exceptional, sparking engaging discussions and insights. ?? I presented the Market Outlook for Supply and Demand in Dry Bulk Shipping, highlighting key industry trends. I shared my opinion of three critical demand and supply drivers driving the dry bulk shipping markets over the next three years. Demand Drivers 1?? A stabilising global economy after the pandemic fosters slower growth. 2?? China's appetite for bauxite and high-quality iron ore, supporting the market even as China's domestic steel demand cools. 3?? India and Southeast Asian economies like the Philippines and Vietnam are stepping up to provide additional market support through coal imports. Supply Drivers 1?? A thin orderbook is a positive signal, helping sustain robust charter rates over the next two years. 2?? Limited shipbuilding capacity until 2027 means most new vessels won't hit the water before late 2028. 3?? IMO emission regulations will likely drive earlier vessel demolitions, accelerating fleet renewal. ??
