Dream Flights is a nonprofit dedicated to honoring the service, sacrifice and stories of America's senior veterans by providing them with a life-changing experience: an open-air flight in the cockpit of one of Dream Flights’ fleet of fully restored WWII-era Stearman biplanes. From its founding in 2011 to today, the organization has honored nearly 6,500 veterans and seniors with free Dream Flights. Each is made possible through the generous donations of corporate sponsors including Sport Clips, Veterans United Home Loans, American Airlines, Allied Pilots Association, Discovery Senior Living, American Healthcare Association/National Center for Assisted Living, Argentum, and individuals and businesses from across the country. The flights are piloted by professional, volunteer pilots, many of whom are retired military aviators. In 2021, Dream Flights completed a 61-day, 49-state mission called Operation September Freedom to honor 891 members of the ‘greatest generation’ for their service and sacrifice. According to Dream Flights' founder Darryl Fisher, this historic tour was our nation’s last opportunity to actively recognize and honor the men and women whose sacrifice led to the Sept. 2, 1945 signing of the Japanese Instrument of Surrender, which effectively ended WWII. "Will my veteran be able to get into the plane?" is the most often asked question by senior living and assisted living communities' activities directors. Every year, pilots and crew chiefs are trained using the safest and most effective techniques for getting senior veterans -- the oldest Dream Flyer was 105! -- in and out of a vintage, open-cockpit biplane. This is a difficult post for us to make as we have lost a beloved Dream Flights family member to cancer. Jann DeLong, volunteer crew chief and loving wife of Dream Flight pilot and husband of 35 years Scott “Scooter” DeLong valiantly fought until her last breath. While we take comfort she is no longer suffering we are sad and are going to miss her and all she brought to our team and mission. She amazingly gave back in the midst of treatments while not feeling her best she still gave her best. Until we meet again dear friend. ? ??
