Two events, separated by more than a century, highlight the importance of valuing human life and the need for systemic change: the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire of 1911 and the modern Purdue Pharma opioid crisis. ???Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire ?? On March 25, 1911, a devastating fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in NYC claimed the lives of 146 garment workers due to inadequate safety measures. This tragedy sparked significant legal and social reforms, underscoring the necessity of proactive measures to protect worker safety. ???Purdue Pharma Opioid Crisis ?? Fast forward to the 21st century, the opioid crisis—fueled by Purdue Pharma's aggressive marketing of OxyContin—has led to widespread addiction and numerous deaths, particularly among injured workers. Despite legal settlements, the adequacy of compensation and corporate accountability remains in question. Both events reveal a troubling pattern: the undervaluation of human life in the face of corporate negligence.
